I wonder what was the exact wording of what the board voted on. Because if you read the executive order that supposedly renamed the Dept. of Defense to the Dept. of War, you will find that it doesn't actually make the name change. Instead, it only authorizes the use of "Dept. of War" as a "secondary name", allowing signage and letterhead changes and allowing the secretary to refer to himself as the Secretary of War, and excludes "statutory documents", meaning that the dept. is still referred to as the Dept. of Defense in contracts, treaties, and the federal budget.

In any event, the speed at which they made the signage change has led me to infer that they know that they didn't make a legal name change. It is SOP for Trump to take quick action in violation of a law so that by the time anyone tries to stop him it is too late.
