Facebook and YouTube could be to blame for the spread of the mystery Tourrette’s-like illness that is blighting a town in upstate New York.

Doctors said that symptoms are being ‘reinforced and magnified’ because victims of the bizarre condition are uploading videos of themselves onto social networking sites to appeal for help.

They argue that when other people in the town of LeRoy view the videos, they are unconsciously mimicking what they see and spreading it around.

It seems to me a case of mass hysteria, using Facebook and YouTube as a vector.

Some people are claiming it's Morgellon's (somehow), while others are blaming a type of strep throat which can lead to OCD, and still others are blaming a chemical spill.

This mind of mass psychosis is quite interesting and I think gives insight into other types of memes like religion as well.

One was diagnosed with Conversion Disorder and she is claiming the diagnosis is wrong, it's really physiological, etc.

And Erin Brockovich is looking for a way to make a buck from it.

Sounds a lot like Morgellon's: no apparent cause, odd behavior among sufferers, no physiological signs, and it spreads despite lacking any possible vector. Which is to say, it's mass hysteria.

Well, she would, wouldn't she?

Patients with hysterical conversion present with striking physical symptoms such as weakness, sensory disorders or memory loss, that suggest a neurological disease but which show no evidence of brain and central nervous system damage.

I've been following the story as Drew PInsky has been milking reporting it. Brokovitch is less than impressing me as well. However, I do not think the girls are faking at all. Conversion disorder is real and can be just as painful as a physiological illness. These are not spoiled brats looking for attention, in my opinion.

I'm waiting to see what transpires before passing judgment.

Silly of me, I know.

See how long you can watch this before needing to reach into the computer and smack her

I did have to turn it off long before she got to whatever conclusion it was she was trying to imply so have no idea on her position on it all but, I don't know whether I misheard this because I wasn't listening properly or what, but it did amuse me when she said "these girls all developed weird psychological symptoms like tits". It's always been my experience that tits are physical, but what do I know?

I saw "tied to gardasil vaccine" and shut the window down.

I think it means they had a tendency to peck open milk bottle tops with their beaks.

14/19 of the affected are girls aged 13-18 apparently. I would think some of them might actually have tourette's and this is just the symptoms appearing. Others probably have conversion disorder, anxiety, or are faking it to some degree. If it the environment, you have to explain why it seems to be affecting only girls at this particular highschool.

Maybe one of them, but isn't Tourette's pretty rare?
