Hell, even here in New Zealand, we learned about General George Thomas... "The Rock of Chickamuga" in American History class. He was the southern General and native of Virginia who chose to fight in the Union Army, and who was widely considered to be a traitor by his fellow Virginians. What a bold slap in the face it would be to have HIS statue and the corner of West Laburnum and Hermitage!
I'm American, and I don't recall ever hearing of him before. Which may mean that New Zealand schools do a better job of teaching American history than American schools do.
