Hey all!

One of my roomate turned me on to www.drudgereport.com

They just constantly update their page with links to other news sources, but it serves as a pretty good overall place to get some news!

Check it out if you have time. I think its pretty quality.

Wow! Is that new?!?

As long as we're recommending obscure websites check out Google, Amazon and eBay. I think they may be household names one day.

One caveat about Drudge - and I don't know if this is still a valid concern or not. Don't leave your PC running at night with your browser on Drudge's page. It doesn't just update news stories; it also updates ads. Several months ago, I was woken up at 3:00 am by a man's voice in the next room. Needless to say it freaked me out, and I went into the room to hear streaming audio coming out of the speakers, apparently coming from an ad on the Drudge homepage. I had Adblock installed, but this somehow got through.

Nevertheless, Drudge is a good portal to quickly get the news.

LOL

I figured it was pretty old, but if it could be new to me it could (possibly) be new to one of you as well!

Drudge has been criticized recently for inflating his page-view statistics with overly frequent automatic page refreshes. I don't know much about it from personal experience. I haven't viewed his site in years. Here's why:

When the movie Planet of the Apes was soon to be released, Drudge ran a big headline "exclusive" that was a spoiler for the big surprise ending of the movie. He was trying to cook up some lame political point about Tim Burton. It was complete non-sequitor and stupid. It was exclusive only in the sense that only Drudge was blasting a spoiler of this movie. Phony political point. Phony exclusive. I've never gone to his site since.

:D I work were Monica Lewinsky went to College. I remember locking her academic records down and fighting off the reporters.

For those scratching their heads right now, Drudge was one of the first places that story was made public.

For a good alternative, go the the Drudge Retort. www.drudge.com

Same basic format, except that it lets readers comment on the stories.

As a source of links to current news stories I guess Drudge is OK. It actually is a little bit more balanced with its choice of links than one might expect given Drudge's politics.

But I don't think much of the site. I would suggest huffingtonpost.com if you are looking for a leftwing look at the news and newsmax.com if you are looking for a rightwing look at the news. I like slate.com, time.com and salon.com also more than drudge. I think he needs to hire somebody with a little skill to work on his site. I'd like to see a regular drudge column, pictures, reader feedback, perhaps a few exclusive contributors besides drudge and a better layout before I'd be a regular user of the drudge site.

Drudge is okay. Most of the stories I like are the more obscure ones that he finds, as opposed to the big, bright headlines he puts up that are often sensationalist, and the same stories that are on all the other news sources. You have to take his site with a grain of salt, but it's not bad. Rather overrated, but not bad.

Having heard of Drudge and his functions, he is sludge, bottom feeding on real newpeople. The few who are left.

As I recall, he links to a ton of man-bites-dog stories in British tabloids. I didn't see much value in his links. He does have a good list of links to other righty sites.
