People I feel are really, really stupid. White's commentary for Texas Muslim Capitol Day:

"I did leave an Israeli flag on the reception desk in my office with instructions to staff to ask representatives from the Muslim community to renounce Islamic terrorist groups and publicly announce allegiance to America and our laws," she posted on Facebook. "We will see how long they stay in my office."

Is it really that difficult to forego that requirement? Do you really need to backhand everything that's different from you? Doesn't this fly in the face of the Constitution? Would she require this on "Texas Christian Capitol Day"?

This is also the first year there have been protesters and people actively trying to disrupt the event. I hate Texas, if the state wants to withdraw from the U.S., I say let it. Give them back to Mexico and be done with it.

I wasn't sure if this should be in USA politics or Social events. Feel free to move it wherever.

Who hassled the Muslims even when they were showing their patriotism:

Local reporters said protesters shouted “Islam is a lie!” at Muslim children when they were singing the National Anthem. One protester reportedly shouted: “There’s no ‘twilight’ in Sharia!”

Though that last is actually a pretty good point in shari'ah's favor, since those books and movies were terrible.

I am willing to renounce all the evil things the USA did in the Spanish-American War. Is that good enough if I am not Muslim? Can I renounce all terrorism, or only Islamic terrorism?

It doesn't seem as if White herself is willing to pledge allegiance to all America ideas.

Is she referring to Muslim visitors... or her staff?

75 degrees here in Austin at the moment. I'd say chill out, but it's 18 degrees in Fargo at the moment... :p

So you're saying it's heat going to everyone's brains? :D

You'd have to go a bit north of Fargo to find me, but I stay here because I really do love this state. It has some drawbacks, but overall it's been good to me. The cold keeps the riff-raff out, the fishing during all seasons is amazing (in the summer we'll fish off the dock for small mouth, pull them out of the water and have them on the grill within 10 minutes....delicious), and the state has a decent structure to it. All-in-all it's pretty good here.

Besides, I'm fat and hairy. Heat and I aren't always the best companions. Fall\Spring are my favorite seasons.

Not only that, but she wasn't even there. It's not like she wanted to see these people do it for her own gratification. She just did it to be a jerk. They've been doing this for a few years now, why not encourage them? They are already stating they love the state (for some reason) and want to be apart of the culture. Talk about tearing off your nose to spite your face.

No kidding, I got halfway through the first movie, was bored and confused so I bailed on it all. I'm assuming it didn't get any better.

The article itself points out: she's a freshman legislator. She has absolutely no idea what civic groups in the Austin area have been doing for years; she probably figured this for some kind of one-off Muslim publicity stunt on the state capitol.

So she's just a run of the mill moron? LoL Doesn't research or know her own area.

Hatred of a population based on a distortion of their presumed views is bigotry. You're engaging in the very form of prejudice you profess to despise.

Has it occurred to you that there is a large segment of the population of Texas that is tolerant, open-minded, free-thinking and, in a word, liberal? That our politicians are largely conservative as a result of gerrymandering election districts and other voting irregularities? That there are even (gasp) Republicans who are kind and thoughtful and freedom-loving people, who would object strongly to the narrow viewpoints evidently espoused by the politician in the OP? That bigotry is objectionable when practiced against any group of people?

It wasn't meant to take literally, I apologize since you are obviously offended. I thought it was apparent by the offer of giving it back to Mexico. As if we'd just fold the border back.

I've been to Texas many times, as my Grandpa has a winter place down there. San Antonio, Houston, and South Padre are all very nice. My Grandpa lives in the Valley, about 30 miles from the Mexico border. So while I do understand that not every single individual that resides in Texas (again, that would be ridiculous to believe) it seems that they have a tendency to vote for people that are bat **** crazy. I understand Gerrymandering, but they couldn't have done it if the population didn't vote the Representatives in.

Aren't they confined to the ghetto of Austin though?

I'm joking. Most of the people I experienced in Texas were fine, normal humans. Juts like most other placed I've been.

I like to make fun of New Yorkers and New Englanders when I am there. Fargo was a great movie. You betcha.

Aside from the fact that putting an Israeli flag on the desk seems like a deliberate poke in the eye...why would she do that while demanding the Muslims pledge their allegiance to America?

It's so very gutsy of her, too, to provoke a confrontation and then leave her staff "instructions" on how to deal with it.

Sorry that your state has become the poster child for the right, but it is what it is. The face it currently presents to the rest of the US is Cruz, Ron Paul, Perry, Bush, executions by the bushel and now the nitwit in the OP. Your points about gerrymandering are correct, Austin itself is split so there is no district that contains a large portion of the city. But until the people of Texas do something about it you can't blame the rest of us for noticing the results.

California outlawed gerrymandering four years ago and it has resulted in a state legislature that is actually quite efficient now.

It also took redistricting for the US House of Representives out of the hands of the legislature and gave it to a non partisan panel . Works fine so far.

And California was as bad as Texas before this happened. Only difference was it was the Democrats who were doint the Gerrymandering.

As to idiot who is the topic of the opening post, just makes me wish We Could give Texas back to Mexico....but the Mexicans are way too smart to accept it......

Don't mess with Texas

Frankly, no. You've got a rich blue area in Austin, a poor blue area in the Valley, and little liberal enclaves like Montrose in Houston, but on the whole any fair representation of Texas is still going to be a church goin', muslim hatin', border fence buildin' dyed in the wool conservative.

Both the governor and House Speaker have delivered a rebuke to Rep. White, although they mentioned no names.
A partial solution, although a mite wimpy from my perspective. ..
