Many, many years ago (1970s?), I read a SF short story (perhaps by Robert Silverburg) in which terrorists were threatening to blow up NYC with a nuclear bomb.

The president had the army stage a spectacular and successful raid. All the terrorists were captured or killed. The president was a hero.

He was asked "How did he know the raid would work?"

His answer was"I expected the raid to fail. I expected millions of people to die. But the only other option was to give in to terrorists. I had no choice."

The story expresses my opinion about responses to terrorism to a tee.

US would be better off with a few less West Coast Democrats ....

Charlie (what has CA done for me lately?) Monoxide

PS I would like to add, I was appalled at the "presidential" actions done when California was getting totally screwed over by Enron. Bush, early in his term, basically said "screw 'em".

Wow. That just inspired a flashback to Chomsky asking if the US Air Force should bomb Boston.

I get it - you think the responses to terrorism so far have been based on works of fiction.
