Terrorism in Canada

Busy few days here in the Great White North.

On Monday, a recent convert to Islam carried out a hit and run with his car against two members of the Canadian Forces in a shopping mall parking lot, killing one and injuring the other. The killer had gotten onto the RCMP watch list for his online postings and also for his attempt to get to Turkey (presumably to join up with ISIS in Syria).

And only this morning - at least two, possibly 3 persons have been involved in an incident in the National Capital. A shooter shot a member of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa doing sentry duty at the National War Memorial. The shooter then got into a car and drove the 3-400m to Parliament Hill where they debussed and went into Centre Block. Apparently the Sgt at Arms shot and killed one of the gunmen, a second shooter has been taken out, and the local police, RCMP and DND are doing a cordon and search of the Hill and area to look for third person of interest.

I'll be honest, my wife is rather distraught at this point and my building is in "lock down" at the moment.

This does represent a dramatic shift for Canada, while there have been a number of incidents of terrorist plots stopped before they actually could have been carried out in the last few years, this really is the first terrorist incident in Canada since the Oka Crisis in 1990, or the FLQ Crisis in 1970.

In the proper spirit of "keeping calm and carrying on" the "Battle of Ontario" (a hockey game between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs) hasn't been cancelled as of 12:15PM

Terrorism and a hockey game? Traffic is going to be ridiculous!

Got a feeling that Sgt of Arms is going to be a hero.
Hopefully this will not cause a reaction for Canada to withdraw from the Anti ISIS coalition.

Hope everything turns out OK for the both of you.

I was curious and looked for a list of various terrorist activities in Canada... there have actually been a few others (depending on you define "terrorist"): In 2009 Ecoterrorists bombed a gas pipeline. In 2000/2001, there were a couple of fire bombings by french language extremists. Then there have been a few "lone nutjobs" who have carried out attacks.

Well, assuming the gunmen have anything to do with ISIS (or heck, are even Islamic at all) I doubt that would happen.

If anything, the government would try to play up the dangers to Canadians, and use it as justification about how "these people need to be destroyed".

Yes, but this seems to be the first really serious, organized terrorist action in Canada since the days of the FLQ.

I don't see Canada leaving the anti-ISIL coalition either. What this almost certainly will do is hurt moderate, non-radicalized Muslims in Canada, with increased suspicion being directed their way.

Well, again it depends on how you define terrorism.

There have been various bombings (by organized groups) in the past few years. (As well as a few "loner" attacks.)

If these individual's are motivated at all by islamic extremism, it would be the first successful coordinated (i.e. more than 1 person) action related to Islamic extremism, but then there was also the plot to blow up a train (which was foiled).

I hear the NHL game is canceled now. I also heard on Fox News, the claim that something like this has not happened in the USA; not sure if I heard it right or if the talking head doesn't recall that four Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire on the Houe of Representatives in 1954.

Yeah, it is a matter of defintiion.
But I maintain that as far as scale and damage go, Canada has not seen anything like this since the "November Crisis" of 1969.

Kansas City Police just announced they will be beefing up security at the World Series tonight because of Ottawa attacks.

Well how are you measuring "scale"? Deaths? Damage? Number of people killed/injured?

We don't know if the 2 shooters are part of a larger organization or are just 2 isolated idiots; other terrorist attacks have involved much larger groups of people (such as the "Squamish 5").

There was one fataility, but the 80s attack on the Turkish embassy also involved a fatality.

If nothing else, this attack has gotten a much high profile then any attack since the FLQ.

Yes it will. And it may have a bigger political fall-out.

But that seems to have more to do with outside circumstances (e.g. international politics, other "terrorist activity", etc.) than with the details of the attack itself.

This is a definite concern.

I'm a little bit nervous about my city being a possible target. We have military facilities here and lots of military personnel walking around in uniform.

It will affect how Canadians get to interact with their Parliament.

In the wake of 9/11, vehicle access was greatly restricted to Parliament Hill and some discrete security measures were implemented. However, public access to Parliament was unrestricted, so long as you went through the metal detector. My fear is that it will affect our access to government.
