Telepathy inside Virtual Reality

Read this It was listed on Slashdot, along with a little comment about how they could win the JREF prize if they can prove it.

Researchers have developed a Virtual reality version of the ESP cards to test telepathy. Reading the story I already see one flaw in their testing procedure... They're picking 2 people that know each other. This could lead to them having a system for which items to pick...

Total overkill, if you ask me. And that makes it fishy.

Why would I have to create a networked, 3D cyber world complete with borg-implant lookalike gloves to facilitate random selection between a number of objects on one side?

All it does is create concerns about real randomness in the selection process, about data leaks and hacking, etc.

If their VR system could eliminate post-failure excuses then it might bring us closer to the truth. I don't see any mention of that however.

One of the VR guys mentioned, Toby Howard, was one of my tutors many many years ago. He was a nice chap. Sci-fi fan if I remember, but no obvious signs of lunacy. I think what's happened here is they've spent a lazy afternoon bolting this experiment onto their existing VR setups just for a bit of a diversion. I doubt it's costing any real time or money.

Darn, I was hoping this thread was about a virtual reality experiment where "telepathy" was simulated as part of the virtual reality.

Here's an old telepathy trick that I'm sure you've seen before. The difference here though is that users can submit how they think the trick works.

For example:

From Tara R.
Quantum mechanics may permit synchronicity of thought and computer software. I suggest that, on the quantum level, you were able to predict the card I selected even before I selected it. It is also possible that my brainwaves may influence your software. Although this seems far-fetched, we know that brainwaves are detectable with SQUID (superconducting quantum interference devices.)

Tee hee :)
