TAM 6 roommates thread

My point is that you don't need to sleep in your car when there is a perfectly good bed in an air conditioned room with someone you could get to know through the forum for 3 months before TAM 6 occurs.

Perhaps. Car-camping by choice is a lot different though than car camping due to lack of housing. Been there. LOL

It gets very hot in Bakersfield, upwards of 115 or so in summer months. Heat won't bug me (too much). But...I have a room reserved just in case becuase they're booking up fast, so if I find roommates then that would settle it.

I myself, have roomed with strange women at TAM 2 and TAA 2 who I had only known previously through the forum/chat (though I had met one previously at TAM 1). My TAA 2 cabinmate has seen fit to room with me at TAM 6 again.

Don't you think that's a bit harsh, US? I met them both, and they don't seem all that strange to me.

:) I suppose I could have phrased that differently.

Really GG, anyone who'd room with US has to be a little strange.:duck:

At least I didn't bore them to sleep talking about hockey. :p

But to be semi-serious for a moment, while I'm not familiar with saganite's horror story, the only other intolerable sharing of quarters I've heard of for TAMs was a gal who no longer posts here that didn't want to stay with her roomie so I invited her to sleep with me and my female roomie who actually paid for the accomodations at TAM2.

My only regret?

I like to sleep with 2 pillows and I gave her one of mine so she'd be comfortable on the couch. I didn't mind giving her the bedspread since it was fairly warm that night, but I should have told her tough noggie on the pillow.
I also wish I'd been able to tell the first roomie about the invite, but she was off painting the town red.

Regardless of the gender, nationality, smoker/non-smoker, political views, etc., don't have any qualms about rooming with someone you've never met before at TAM... just make sure, through the forum, PMs, chat and possibly telephone calls, that you're not still "strangers" when it comes to check-in time.

Yeah...I don't by any means think my experience was normal, it was just unlucky. I'm just saying--just as you wouldn't hire an employee with no prior track record or professional references, maybe it's best to room with someone that somebody else on the forum knows and can vouch for. I spoke to my roommate-to-be on the phone beforehand, and we met for a get-to-know-you drink the evening we came in, both of which went just fine. Yet still, things somehow went bad and I got blindsided by a bad roomie. (Who doesn't post here anymore, and was irresponsible enough that even if she did come back, I wouldn't mind calling her out on her bizarre behavior.)

Michelle, just so you can be reassured. I made arrangement on the Alaskan cruise to room with someone I had never met before and who isn't active on the forum. I was a bit apprehensive, but it turned out well. She was an interesting person, and nice talks whenever we were in the room together, which was infrequently, and learned quickly to work around each other using the bathroom and nighttime reading lights!

Would anyone else like to share? And Flamingo policy.

Wowbagger and I have PM'ed and agreed to be roommates. :D

I have looked up the hotel policies, and they go something like this. Up to two people in a room is no additional charge. The third and fourth people are $30 each per night, additional. The hotel will put up to two single beds and two cots in the room. More than four to a room are not allowed. These seem to be the rules regardless of what type of room you rent.

Here's the math (before the 9% tax) for the Deluxe room with the JREF discount:
1-2 people, $119 per night for three nights = $357. If two people, $178.50 each.
3 people: $387 total, or $129 each.
4 people: $417 total, or $104.25 each.

Because I have found at least one roommate, I've given up the car-camping idea. :) My car isn't pretty, but it is pretty roomy, and will hold a lot of stuff, so people who are teleporting to TAM can store their things in there if they choose, so it doesn't clutter the room. If we do that then four to the room might work - it's only 300 square feet ("Deluxe" sounds so much bigger. LOL). Upgrading to a Luxury room is certainly an option but would cost a little more per person. They go for $189 per night, I believe.

PS. Our room is non-smoking.

LOL! Well the quip about boys keeping hands to themselves is a reference to past life events I've had, which involved hostels or other community sleeping arrangements. People don't always, erm, behave. This seems like a pretty smart bunch but I just don't want anyone to get into trouble. We are, after all, meeting on the internet. :yikes:

I'm looking to fly from Australia specifically for TAM. I'm open to sharing a room (specifically, room costs) in Las Vegas. Non-smoking, but I do snore (so my wife says)

A non-smoking Aussie with a wife to account to might, despite the snoring, be able to get someone to cover the cost and just let you bunk with them. Keep posting and you might get someone to help assauge your outrageous airfare costs with a place to sleep. :)

Anyone else want to slumber with me and Michelle?

We're going to try to see how many people we can stuff into a single room, without getting caught. If anyone, here, is a contortionist, we can probably fit you into the mini fridge.

(Note to any hotel staff that might happen upon this post: I was only kidding about that second paragraph!)

One more Aussie looking to share a room. Non-smoker, male (in case you were wondering from name),cognitive scientist. The option of multiple Aussies in one room now exists. This might be good or bad thing.

Hey Wowbagger,

I'll share a room, I dont mind if i have to sleep on a cot. The registration and flight costs are burden enough, itll be nice to save some on the room costs.

All right. As long as you don't smoke; are NOT prone to steal, murder or abuse people; and if Michelle Lyon approves. Then, why not?!

Post more to the forum and start a PM dialogue with Wowbagger and ML so they know what to expect and see you in June!

Zytheran and ming, any chance you guys would chance sharing a room? I realize someone covering the cost would take the bite out of what Quantas will charge you, but going halfzies might work if you allow me to be so presumptive that a lot of your incidental costs will be covered.

I'm interested in a roommate--in fact, it may be impossible for me to afford to come without one, I'm not sure yet. Anyway, if anyone wants a reference, I roomed with Chaos (if he's still around) at TAMs 2 & 3.

To me, it's a place to crash. I come in late, fall down, sleep, get up, shower, get dressed, and leave. I may get on the laptop some. I'm fairly unobtrusive.
