Ok, I looked and there does not appear to be a roommates thread for TAM 6 yet, so I am starting one now.

I have not booked a room yet and would like to share a room with one or two people. I expect to arrive on Wednesday and leave on Monday morning.

So, who else is looking for a hotel room share?

I have booked a deluxe room at the Flamingo from the 18th to the 22nd. If anyone wants to cut down on costs and share, send me a PM.

I had a roommate last year, and it was not a great experience. I know we're all skeptics here, but, ironically, we can also be an overly trusting bunch at times. So I feel the need to urge people to try to room with people they already know, and to use caution in bunking with strangers. PM me for horror stories if you must know more.

Anyway, needless to say, I'll be going solo this year. And you know what that means. Paaaaaarty at the Saganite headquarters. (NOT the Saganite hindquarters.)

Howdy,

I'm leaving the UK in June; looking for a place to work in California, so I thought I'd stop by TAM 6 whilst I'm there...

Can anyone share some tips / recommendations on how to make the most out of it when travelling alone?

I get the impression that the atmosphere is very open and welcoming, so meeting some cool people shouldn't be too difficult, but I just don't want to assume too much...

Any thoughts?

Everyone is friendly. However, my experience is that it will be much easier to make friends and find some people to hang with, if you establish a presence here, so that people will know who you are in advance. As I mentioned earlier, I just showed up on a JREF cruise 18 months ago, and didn't know anyone. I made some acquaintenances, but it's been much more fun to attend JREF events when I got to know lots of people through the forum.

Post in the TAM6 threads here, and also go over to Forum Community and just jump in. When you get 50 posts, you get an avatar.

ETA: Everyone is friendly, but there are a couple strange people here. :D

Hey, I didn't see this thread, before! I, too, can accept a roomate. For me, it is not necessary, but I am making the offer as a courtesy for someone who needs it.

As long as you don't smoke in the room, you could probably be my roomate.

Well, I have my room booked, and Cruise Roomie gets the right of first refusal, but if he's tired of me making fun of his snoring, then I'm open to roommates (non-smoking) between Tues before to the following Monday night.

Oh wait, nevermind, I figured it out. LOL

I'm the boring sort of roommate. I don't drink or party or gamble or smoke, I just sit there, on my butt, reading books and surfing the internet. I'm a complete nerd. LOL After spending days in lectures and workshops I'm going to want to retire in peace and probably jsut sleep. So if there are other nerds about who would also just sleep or sit on their butts reading, then maybe a roomshare is possible?
Oh and I'd need roommates that aren't allergic to any animals, I tend to carry cat and parrot dander on me. :)

On bunking with strangers, that's not bad as long as everyone understands that there is a trust element that can't be violated in events like this. Most people know that and are okay, but you do get an ass in the group sometimes.

You are so going on the excursion to the Gun Store to shoot a Thompson Submachine Gun.....:D;)

Much obliged, but I booked my own room this time around. (Getting in town early to hit some poker tables - woo-hoo!)

'Course, your roomie will have to deal with your snoring, but hey. :D

There are plenty of non-boring people who don't gamble or smoke, and many non-boring who are not comfortable in crowds and therefore don't go to parties. There is a wide range of people at TAM, all welcome.

This is the one I don't understand. I can imagine such a concept as sleeping during TAM, but that means missing on SO many fun activities and people. I plan to sleep the entire week before and after, but not much during. :D

This is weird. Last night at work when I was sober and alert I saw and replied to your question post but completely missed this one while sligh.. er.. bombed and getting ready for bed.

As far as your "boring" aspects, you do realize you're describing the what the vast majority of what forumites do in their off time? TAMs and other such multi-day events are just "different" and even if you're not a big partier (hell, I'm an alcoholic who does not drink if I can help it at Amaz!ng functions) there are still plenty of opportunities for casual socialization and chit chat sessions with like minded people you might not otherwise have not had the opportunity for in your daily life, but for some of us shyer folks, to have avoided. :)

On bunking with strangers, that's not bad as long as everyone understands that there is a trust element that can't be violated in events like this. Most people know that and are okay, but you do get an ass in the group sometimes.

I understand that completely and will offer a caveat and a compiled anecdote. If you chose to room with a known person to the forum, you have no reason to be concerned because they have already established themselves. I myself, have roomed with strange women at TAM 2 and TAA 2 who I had only known previously through the forum/chat (though I had met one previously at TAM 1). My TAA 2 cabinmate has seen fit to room with me at TAM 6 again.

My point is that you don't need to sleep in your car when there is a perfectly good bed in an air conditioned room with someone you could get to know through the forum for 3 months before TAM 6 occurs.

Just as long as they don't hit back....

I DON'T SNORE!!!! I merely need to breath more deeply than most.....

So if anyone needs a roomie, fairly quiet, non-smoker and not likely to stay out too late, but knows most of the Forum Folks by sight, check in with me.

Good afternoon! I am still undecided on whether I'll be rooming or car-camping. However, I have a room reserved, just in case. So if there are any non-smoking introverts who want to share, do let me know. They will allow up to two people/beds with no extra charge, so we'd split the room cost down the middle sans room services (if you order it, you pay for it) - it'd cost around $200 each at the end. The room I reserved is a Deluxe, check-in June 19 at 4 PM and check out June 22 at 11 AM.

Male or female OK but you boys need to keep your hands to yourselves. ;)

The hotel policy is that a third or fourth person would be $30 extra each, but more than two to a Deluxe might be a little crowded. So if there's four of us then we can upgrade the room.

Anyone interested?
