Suse linux and Nvidia

After a lot of pain trying to get XP to understand my new motherboard, SATA drive etc, I gave up and installed Suse linux PE 9.2 which went on no trouble. Some problems with video which I've main fixed except one. My screen seems to be divided into 4 horizontal bands, progressivelt lighter from top to bottom. Any suggestions? I have the latest Nvidia drivers for Linux installed via YOU, a Geforce MX400, Philips 170C4 LCD screen.
 
Amazingly enough, I too have Suse linux, and an MX400. I haven't had any problems though.

Do you get the effect in all aplications, or is it just the background? It may be that the resolution (bits per pixel) isn't high enough.
 
It's on everything under KDE and FVWM. Oddly though one tool (was its Sax2? groggy from lack of sleep) seemed okay. I suspect I messed something up while trying to fix previous display problems caused by using the nv drivers when I thought I'd loaded the nvidia drivers. I.e. the kind of error that leads you on all kinds of wild goose chases.
I need to clear enough space to swap my LCD for my CRT. The I need to find time to RTFM
 
Damn, one of these days I gotta take the plunge into Linux.

I've tried a few of the live-CD's, have played around with Knoppix a bit, but haven't gone with a full bore installation yet.

Sure sounds tempting...

If you want fast and cheap - yes. I'd still recommend most people to buy a pre-configured PC with windows XP.
But only because they'll find all the stuff they want on discs on mag covers in UK newsagents. And they won't pester me much apart from getting all the malware off their PCs.
If you're building for yourself today I'd recommend Suse linux 9.2 over XP as long as you're not that bothered about games.

If I didnt play computer games I would still use my Amiga 600 :)
