Student killed in shooting at Fresno school

Really doesn't. Bats are potential lethal weapons, so a lethal response is acceptable.
Acceptable, yes, but if there is a solution which is not lethal it is inherently better. If he had a non-lethal weapon he should have used it, but considering the circumstances (just being struck in the head) I'm not surprised he didn't take the time to consider every aspect of the situation.

And Oliver just looks sillier with his apology.
Great. Keep that up and no one will ever apologize for anything.

Except you called the cop an idiot after you knew the facts...
In hindsight, I think that post was meant as a correction - the person Oliver originally thought was an idiot turned out to be a cop who shot the student after being attacked with a baseball bat, thus not being an idiot.

I admit I interpreted as you did, so it was a pretty poorly worded correction.

You don't usea taser when you're being attacked with a deadly weapon. And besides, he had already been struck in the head and at best a taser incapacitates the attacker for a few seconds, after which the taser is useless (must be reloaded) and the cop is in no condition to wrestle with a suspect brandishing a deadly weapon.

Sheesh, cops here in Chicago are getting criticized for killing a 120 lb. wild cougar running loose in a densely populated neighborhood. Always getting second guessed by people whose only quick decision they've ever had to make at work is what to get from the vending machine...

I don't know if he had a taser or how well that taser would have worked, I'm not judging him, nor am I saying that I would have acted differently. My point was that just because a situation makes lethal force acceptable doesn't mean it's necessarily the best option. But I'm sure police officers know that better than most people.

Hey, whether we agree with Oliver or not, he did realize he'd spoken too soon, and apologized. I can admire that. Ok, only that, but still. :p

Hey, wait a minute. Oliver, you haven't followed up about the murder by beheading trial near Detroit. Guy was convicted by jury, sentenced to life in prison automatically because there is no death penalty. 2nd guy pled guilty after testifying against killer and will get 20 yrs or so.

Man bites dog. But it proves that America is wicked, right?

Does anything ever happen in Germany these days? I don't know what, exactly... Do German skinheads ever do anyone harm?

Oh lay off Oliver. He's hasty, but he fesses up. Think of the number of -- I want to say idiots -- around here who would NEVER admit to a mistake.

I still don't know what the Pope has to do with it. He didn't shoot that poor soul; he was miles away.

Coincidently (and speaking of dogs):

German police probe animal beheadings

No, but apparently a Muslim stabbed a rabbi...

Oliver corrected his mistake. Unusual for him - it should be noted and encouraged.

I know of someone who thought that prof Falk, who wrote the intro to DRG's opus, is not a twoofer. When presented with concrete proof that Falk was indeed a twoofer- He muttered something about there still being no proof and ran away.

Hey, I just thought of something....
Oliver's intial post seemed to be very critical of private gun ownership in the US.
Oliver worships the very ground that Ron Paul walks on and has been a blind defender of Paul's stand on every issue.
Paul is violently against ANY kind of gun control, even those most gun owners find acceptable (a waiting period on gun purchases, for instance)/
Do I see a big contradiction here or not?
Just another day in Oliver land.

Hah. Screw the apology, I'm more curious about the "liberal Policemen and -women" remark that was no doubt some strange jab at the United States.
