Merged StopSylvia emails

Keep the site up as an example but please stop making threads on here about the emails you get from your site.

She's dead. Enough already!

Brattus I can't speak for everyone on here but I personally enjoy RSL posting emails on here from people on his website StopSylviaBrowne.com.
To me it helps us understand why people whom you like to trash as "gullible" follow frauds like Browne.

Seconded

Why not a compromise, and have one thread for discussion of emails about her passing, and separate threads for other emails?

I agree with this. Just add emails to the opening post as they arrive.

A thread for every email about her dieing, which basically has posters pointing out the same points over and over again, Is personally a little bit annoying.

Although I firmly disagree with the mods' decision that any SSB emails I wish to post and which reference her death should be added to this merged thread, I am adding this one here.

I received the following email at StopSylvia, with the subject "Respect":

Hi
I hope you can put your swords down now and leave this subject and family alone since Sylvia's passing.
Out of respect anyway!
Regards
[first name]

My reply:

Mr. [last name]:

Thank you so much fr taking the time to share your thoughts with me.

However, I have no intension of shutting this site down now (as you seem to be suggesting), for a number of reasons, including:

1. I fully expect her family and publishers to try and capitalize on her passing by marketing her books, tapes, etcetera in such a way as to try to take advantage of the public's tendancy to "hero-worship" a celebrity after that celebrity's death. Should they do so, this site will still be up and accessible, giving the facts about Browne's purported "abilities", and, I hope, tempering any such "hero-worship".

2. Her son Christopher DuFresne has been being groomed as her successor for some time. I think this site, with a few articles about him, as well as its many articles about his mother, will help to put a crimp in any plans he may have to continue his mother's practice of taking advantage of people at their most vulnerable moments (the death of a loved one, a missing child, etcetera).

3. I think that the site serves to show people that a "psychic" - no matter how well-known and popular - can still be shown to almost certainly be a fraud. As such, I hope it will continue to encourage people to take a long, hard look at any "psychic" (whether on television or in a storefront) to see if they can discern any of the same stage tricks (such as Cold Reading) which Browne used to fool so many people for so many years.

For these reasons and more, I think that the site continues to provide a valuable public service, even though Browne has passed on.

Best regards,

You know, the one thing that sticks in my mind is that you weren't the one who fired the first shots with Sylvia Browne. Randi was. And Sylvia AGREED on NATIONAL TELEVISION to take the challenge.

That's a matter of public record.

And, quite frankly, Randi was far more deferential than I would have been.

This crap about laying down swords is insulting, especially since Sylvia Browne spent her time and money hiring a private investigator to dig up dirt on you. (I mean, really, Robert. What was she looking for? Evidence you pick your nose? That you enjoy tacos from lunchwagons? Geez!)

Ignore these clods, please.

RSL,

You forgot number 4 in your response.

I didn't respect her when she was alive and scamming people. Why would I respect her now that she is dead?

Harsh? Yes. True? Yes.

I took the "respect" to mean respect for her family's grief.

Besides, I did say that I was not listing ALL of my reasons...

Maybe it would be an idea to put a statement along those lines on the web site? It does seem odd that there's no mention of the fact that Sylvia has died.

That is the plan, as I believe I mentioned earlier in this thread (although, in this friggin' merged mess, I'm not sure whether it got merged in...).

Back to the "Respect" correspondence:

Here is his reply:

Then at least call it "Stop Christopher DuFrense" otherwise people will think your a crazy man with a grudge against a deceased person!

...to which I replied:

No, because the vast majority of traffic to the site is a result of people doing a web search on "Sylvia Browne".

Besides, I seriously doubt that he will get anywhere near as popular as his mother was. If he starts to, I will seriously consider putting his name in the site's title.

I had originally considered naming the site "The Truth About Sylvia Browne" because, among other reasons, it would not require a name change if Browne were ever to be stopped (whether by death or anything else).

If anyone thinks that I am a crazy man because the site is still open, I can live with that (it would be among the least of my problems, believe me).

I hope to add at least one more article to the site, announcing her passing an stating my reasons for leaving the site up, and will do so as soon as health and technical issues allow.

Best,

...to which he replied:

I personally prefer Louise Hay anyway ;-)

Thanks, xterra.

All I recalled about Louise Hay was that she was the founder of Hay House Publishing, which published many/most of Browne's books, as well as those of a buttload of other woo authors.

ETA:

She was featured/mentioned in one (rather lame) SSB article, titled something like "What Does Louise Hay Think of Sylvia Browne?"
