Merged Solar Eclipse 2017!

Last edited:
I received an e-mail from my power company, Duke Energy, with a link to an online article: What does the solar eclipse mean for solar power?

By my reading the key points were:

This is normally a peak time for solar energy production, and Sammy Roberts, Duke Energy director of system operations, estimates solar energy output will drop from about 2,500 megawatts to 200 megawatts in 1 1/2 hours.

Because of its flexibility, operators will have natural gas plants ready to step in during the eclipse.

Hurray for fossil fuels!

(The article is actually not as biased as I made it sound above.)

I might stay home near Seattle and enjoy the 93% eclsipse from my deck instead.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is warning drivers that the August 21 eclipse could cause the worst traffic mess in Oregon history. The traffic jams on the highways could rival the problems caused by our winter storms last year, which trapped people in gridlock overnight.

Police are concerned about the traffic impacts so much that ODOT said they plan to stop construction projects on highways and shut down weigh stations to allow emergency responders and police to stage there. That will allow them to reach drivers in an emergency quicker.

I read that some people recommended that you drive to the eclipse path on Sunday, enjoy the eclipse on Monday, then drive home on Tuesday. Not for me.

Here's a snapshot from the Wyoming Department of Transportation taken a few minutes ago depicting the increase in traffic on I-25.

I just got home from the grocery store. The kiosk was gone. I asked one of the managers and she said every last pair had sold.

I ordered a 5-pack of glasses on-line and they are due to arrive today. I checked with NASA.gov to make sure they are legit ISO-certified glasses. I've heard some horror stories of counterfeit glasses being sold. How despicable is this? People can be seriously harmed.

Apparently, Amazon has recalled the sale of a number of suspect glasses. They can't confirm if the glasses meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.

Yeah, pretty despicable for someone to sell something that might end up blinding thousands of people. Criminal, even.

My plastic frame eclipse glasses got recalled by Amazon. The prices on eclipse glasses are now insane. Luckily I still have a 10 pack of the good paper Rainbow Symphony glasses I bought a few months ago.

I'm curious if Amazon's recall and cutoff of all sales will lead to a number of people getting eye damage because glasses are now hard to find and expensive.

OT for this thread, but Amazon has had a long standing problem with counterfeit products.

Hmm. I can't figure out what is going on. The manufacturer of the plastic glasses is Daylight Sky. That is an approved manufacturer. The vendor (Tried-And-True Products) says these come from the approved supplier Solar Eclipse International. They say these are not knockoffs and are ISO certified, however due to the confusion they are still giving full refunds. Some people are saying they have confirmed with Daylight Sky that the glasses from Tried-And-True are legitimate.

Are you willing to risk testing them? Put them on. Go outside and look at the sun. Come back in and see if you can read this post. If you can't read this post, take the glasses off!

Just had a funny exchange with my sister. I told her we are going to the event at the airport to watch the eclipse. She asked "Won't all the landing and airport lights spoil your view?"
Me:"Ummm.... no. A solar eclipse takes place during the day."
I admit I had to catch myself on this a couple times early on.

I might need some driving advice. Going from Maryville, MO to the Rosecrans airport near St.Joseph. Looks like that will be astronomer central! There is only one bridge for miles around connecting the Maryville river to the airport side. I'm not too worried about the return trip.

Yeah, I know... "Leave now!"
