Merged Solar Eclipse 2017!

Thanks to being reminded by this thread, I've just made us reservations in Portland. We'll rise early and head south and find a nice rest area or parking lot in the path. I have a cousin in Portland so we'll work in a nice visit.

I have relatives in the Willamette valley (Springfield among other places), so I'll be there. I'm thinking if the weather is suspect, I should be able to hop in the car in the morning and drive east. But I've never taken any of the roads there.

Google says it's a 3-hour drive from Springfield to Madras. Is that realistic?

Don't forget the amount of traffic you are going to see on the few 2 lane highways that go east toward Madras, and the roads from Madras east don't go along the eclipse path if you need to go further east. You have to go well to the north or south and back.

That's why I'm headed toward the John Day area, there is a road east and west that stays close to the center line.

My friend and I were discussing plans about going to see totality.

I thought I'd start a thread here since some might need longer to plan than I do.

(He lives in Mount Airy, NC...I live just outside Raleigh. Columbia SC is going to expereice totality. He drives south in I-77 and I drive on I-95 to I-20 and we are going to meet at Riverbanks Zoo just outside Columbia. I thought it would be a good idea to meet there since the animals might go all "beginning of 2001 crazy" when the eclipse starts.)

So...there's the path.

Get planning!

I think the next time there's totality in NA is in 2024, up by Edmonton...I think.

I live 2 miles from the Riverbanks Zoo but I plan to camp out on the top of the parking deck at Lexington Hospital to try and film the event with my gopro.

The eclipse will only last 3 minutes at most and with it being in the 100's here in August chances are the animals will sleep through the eclipse.

Do what I'm doing and try to find a zoo.

Don't the animals freak out during an eclipse?

Actually no, a few birds think it's dusk. But it doesn't get that dark. I was in Mexico during the '91 eclipse, 6 minutes long. Sadly the clouds rolled in just before totality. But you could experience how dark it got.

Cairns Australia ( my half time home town ) was booked up way ahead that's saying something since the regions handles 3 million tourists a year.

Was certainly worth it....I rode by this spot today

they got a perfect diamond ring ( I was in Canada at the time )

I've seen a couple ....the best was at Uni ...perfect day and classic wind change and birds as it darkened down.

Good luck
I'm in Australia just now ...sigh

I've just notified my newly engaged niece that if she picks those dates for her wedding we won't be there. Ok, I didn't put it quite that way, but she'll figure it out.

My excitement is growing every day. At the age of 77, this will be my first view of a total solar eclipse. I'm hoping for great viewing from Teton Village in Jackson Hole. Does anyone know of a "no clouds" dance or prayer for a non-believer?

I think I will finally go back up to Nashville for 'cue at Martin's down on 4th Ave. and head up to Hoptown next day for the eclipse!!!

Is it too early to look beyond 2017?

The next big eclipse in North America will be in 2024 and go through Dallas, Texas. I'm looking beyond that to 2045 when one of the longest eclipses will go through the middle of my home state, Colorado. In Colorado, total duration will last well beyond five minutes. I doubt I will live long enough to see it. In 2045, I will be 84 years old, or dead. Here's to wishful thinking.

We're staying in Portland, out of the direct track, so we're probably safe.

Given the news story, I decided to confirm my reservations in Casper. All is good. The reservations are intact and the rates have not been hiked.

Trebuchet, I think you are probably safe, too. I think the stories coming from Oregon might be slightly hyped. However, a confirmation phone call goes a long way to gain peace of mind.

Good luck and clear skies to you.
