Sodium fluoride

Ehi there. I'm interested in the sodium fluoride dispute over there in the US. In Europe we don't feel as strongly about it, a lot of our countries don't even use it.

What's the real harm that you can receive from the fluoride salts in the tap water? I'm already digging up scientific articles from pubmed, but I was wondering if any of you had some insights or a recap to give me.

Thank you.

The last time I was aware of any controversy about it, The John Birch Society was a political force. If it has become an issue again, I haven't heard of it.

Fluoride overdose is bad for tendons. I seem to have a bad-tendon syndrome, so I've been avoiding it. That state law mandates putting it into the water supply "when funds become available". Not anytime soon.

Tooth decay is damn near a thing of the past. Between other sources of fluoride and better dental care, I just don't see the need to give the supplement universally for something that is useful for only 1/10 of our lifespan.

Ok, this helps a little, thanks.
Let me ask this: it sodium fluoride still in the US water supplies? If yes, how much?

"Ice cream, Mandrake? Children's ice cream!"

I got two lymph nodes in thyroid which are still being investigated even after 4 months of scans and ultra sounds . But I stopped Fluoride tooth paste and tap water drinking 4 months back. The nodes swelling is checked and irritation has stopped . I do take Zeolites powder.

That was general Jack D. Ripper (USAF) to group captain Lionel Mandrake (RAF) in "Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb" (1964).

I've actually seen it but I didn't remember that line. Ah ah ah!

Yeah, I am looking up evidence (and even conspiratory sites, to have an idea of what the wackos say), but since you people are usually very kind and well informed, I was hoping to get a starting point and a general idea from you.
Espacially because, living in Europe, almost nobody talks about it.

Actually, the stuff you pointed out to me by now is pretty good, so thank you everybody.

There's a whacking thread about this in the Conspiracy Theories section, that has been going for ages.

Whether it sheds any light, as opposed to generating heat, I couldn't really say.

Rolfe.

I got turned into a newt.

I got better.

It's one of those perennial issues, unfortunately.

Like antivaxxination or creation science: skeptics have a permanent job tackling small brush fires here and there. I think it's sometimes referred to as 'whack-a-mole'.

Fluoridation was on referendum in Waterloo ON last month.

I heard sodium fluoride treated water not only causes the teeth to be strong and cavity resistant but also causes assertiveness in children. This is caused by the crystallization of the fluoride within micro-fractures of the calcium within the teeth making the structural deficiencies into strengths.

It's not that I don't love women. I just deny them my essence.

I'm no sure what you mean by assertiveness in children-- but as for fluoride's effect on teeth, it's because teeth are made from the mineral apatite. In the structure of apatite, there is a spot where two atoms sit-- an oxygen and a hydrogen (together, they form OH, or hydroxyl). This type of apatite is called hydroxyapatite.

When something acidic comes in contact with hydroxyapatite, hydrogen atoms from the acid react with the OH in your teeth, breaking down the structure of the hydroxyapatite. In the case of teeth, this is bad.

Here's where fluoride comes in-- an atom of fluoride (F) is about the same size as the OH, and has the same charge (-1). This means that the F can replace the OH in the structure of apatite, making fluorapatite. Now, when acids come in contact with fluorapatite, not much happens. Like magic (science!), your teeth are now more resistant to decay.
