So-called "Spirit Boxes"

Listening to that static, watching the snow on a TV screen - that's something only a few generations ever experienced. Old folks who didn't grow up with TV didn't experience it, younger kids who grow up with digital TV's or radio tuners don't experience it either.

It's like the line in "Neuromancer".

"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."

These days, that would be usually indicate a bright blue sky.

The thing that I find most amusing when discussing hearing voices in a variety of media when there is no vocal track present, is that those who do hear them don't engage another one of their sense, namely smell.

If they did they would soon realise that it is ********.

When I watch Bilbo Bagans and he whips out the spirit box, the only thing I can imagine the ghosts wanting to communicate is "turn that ^&*(@! thing down!"

Slept with a fan on last night because it was hot and, when I woke, over its quiet hum and rustle I could also hear that the TV had been left on downstairs. I could hear a number of voices talking, male and female, but not quite discern any of their words.

I lay for a while wondering if turning the fan off would let me hear them better or make them vanish. Yeah, they vanished. TV wasn't on.

I was going to say this exact same thing! I also don't hear them unless my head is turned at a particular angle to the fan. I can move my head and the voices go away.

It's a cool phenomenon. It sounds exactly like a conversation, but, frustratingly, you can't decipher any words. I also sometimes get the same effect when the shower is running, but not as strongly as with the fan.

I buy most of my spirits in boxes, so I was rather disappointed to find that's not what the thread is about.

Here you go. I keep it in my subscribed folder.

For those who haven't seen these threads, give yourself at least a week to get through all 200 pages or 7955 posts.

Sad case of a woman, completely beyond help, but fascinating nonetheless.

Now that was dirty pool! I just spent 2 weeks lost in the rabbit hole. It was fascinating though - thanks for linking it.
