ADELANTO, Calif. — A young boy survived his father's killing spree by playing dead (search) after the man killed his wife and wounded the boy before shooting himself, authorities said.

Aaron Kinard was eating cookies and drinking milk when his father shot him and his mother Sunday. The boy, who turned 9 on Monday, remained motionless on the floor until his father shot and killed himself.

How sh!tty!!

It would be a lot better if these child murder/suicide loonies took care of the suicide before doing the murders. I would pay money for the opportunity to kick this guys dead body.

We don't always agree Fool but we do in this instance.

This has always puzzled me. Why do these people, who are apparently tired of living, feel the need to kill their partners and/or children before doing themselves? They have the sequence all wrong. 1) Kill self 2) let family members die of old age or natural causes.

It's always a mistake to try to rationalize the irrational.

If I had to, however, I would imagine that this sicko had decided that the world was too painful to live in (for whatever reason, maybe they canceled his favorite TV show), so first he would "save" his family and then himself from the burden of living in it.

Or maybe he thought he was sparing them from having to live with his suicide.

Or maybe he just didn't like the idea of them living after he was gone. Sometimes people can be that possessive.

Does it really matter?

Great advice Upchurch, but a little too late to have saved my marriage (and a few relationships).

I think what happens in these murder-suicides (and don't quote me on this, it's been a while since I've studied the subject) is that the murder occurs first, then the killer commits suicide out of remorse for their actions.

... Remorse, or perhaps fear of the consequences.

I suspect that there may also be an element of "I'm suicidal, so I don't see why anyone else should have a good time". Most suicides are ultimately selfish after all.

I wouldn't say that. My brother's father-in-law, when he killed himself, left a suicide note saying (in summary) "don't let this spoil your 21st birthday", referring to his daughter. One of the police officers who attended said that lots of people who kill themselves leave notes with a similar sentiment: don't worry about me, go on with your lives, I'm not worth it.

Well on Corrie when Dastardly Dick tried to kill Gale, Sarah Louise, Bethany and David it was because he wanted them all to be together for eternity.

I've always wondered how the death penalty fits into the murder/suicide equation.

I've been of the opinion that people who murder don't really think of the consequences, at least until after the deed is done and consequently never bought into the death penalty as a deterrent.

Did this guy fear he would get the death penalty, wouldn't get it, did he fear life in prison, or was he remorseful, or just crazy?

Ever notice that there are relatively few murder/suicides where the murder stabs himself to death? In fact, almost all use guns. Maybe if he didn't have a gun, he might be a little less likely to commit this specific kind of crime.

Oooh, good one. Now all we need to do is outlaw guns and then prevent them from being manufactured and distrbuted through a black market. We can have a war on guns. ;)

Edited to add, your point is quite valid. I'm not certain of practical value though.

Yep as we all know guns have magic powers that make anyone in their proximity become crazed murderers.
