Side-grading from XP to Linux.

Did you read post #34?
Yes I did, and dort of replied to it in post #37 as part of replying to your post #32. Here's a more thorough reply.

Post #34 mostly talks about the NVidia drivers. But if you're not running the NVidia driver, there many be other exploitable bugs on your system. There's a lot running behind the scenes on a typical Linux (and Windows) computer. On Linux, run 'top' or 'ps -ef' to see a list of running programs. Every one of them potentially contains exploitable bugs.

We're also trying to point out that it is possible for a program to start running as a normal user without you (also running as a normal user) consciously starting it yourself, and further that it is possible for that program to exploit known bugs within Linux to gain additional privileges.

Once you return from your suspension, could you answer the three questions I posed in post #36, please? That will give us an idea of your level of knowledge of computers in general and Linux in particular.

Just nitpicking here, but Linux is NOT an OS. Linux is a kernel. Ubuntu, Debian et al are the OSes, which are built around the Linux kernel.

I think Microsoft has shot itself in the foot with Vista. Look at the success of the Asus Eee. It has sold out and a lot of manufacturers look set to bring out their own versions. My own case was I was happy with XP and now I feel I have to jump to Linux or Vista.
I have got Ubuntu 7.10 sort of running from a Live CD.:D
