If you want to take a broad look at what's going on, though, here's an article from one of the participants -- Wilkinson vs. United States (1961?). (Yes, I know, Wilkinson is specifically focusing on the First Amendment, not the Fifth, but the principles and procedures are pretty clear.)

To the best of my knowledge, Wilkinson has never been repealed/overturned/vacated/whatever.

While interesting, it did not explain how invoking the Fifth has to be done before one gives one's name in order for it to remain in force, though it does show that Congress has a talent for contriving kangaroo courts.

I suspect that there numerous laws formally on the books that are outdated both in theory and in practice. No matter what is on the books, I seriously doubt a McCarthy type inquisition would be possible today.

I skimmed the case. Not sure how to feel....I guess I'll go with shocked and appalled.

Do you really think anyone has the guts to rely on a HUAC case? The bad press alone makes it not worth the trouble.
