Should school be fun?

Fun does not equal permissive or devoid of substance.

I have to brag on my stepfather a little bit. When he was a middle school teacher, he had a distinct reputation of being a strict disciplinarian. However, he taught his classes with flair and humor. He was consistently voted the students' favorite.

So my answer is yes... but the fun must be tempered by control, and the control by fairness. That's not easy to do. But I must say I met several shining examples, even in a public school education.

Schooling is our foundation not only for our academic studies, but also as Kitty observed for children to learn social activities and interaction. I look back on my school days which I thoroughly enjoyed, even though I attended a boarding school in the UK.

As a pupil I always responded to the teachers who displayed excellent subject knowledge, with discipline, encouragement and who added a little humour along the way.

Just wanted to say all the posts between my last and this were dead on. :)

My two cents for what's it's worth. School should be engaging, which is not always fun. You might be working your butt off, hence not "fun", but you are engaged completely in the task.

How do this? I leave that up to you folks.
