Should I be Scared?

You don't need a degree just a good book for amateur astronomers from the library or book store. There are plenty I'm sure.

Also, a pair of binoculars is your friend when you are getting into astronomy. Don't spend a lot of money on an expensive telescope until and unless you are ready to take advantage of it, and don't spend a little money on a cheap department-store telescope that will do nothing but frustrate you.

Another good approach is to look up your local group of amateur astronomers, who should give you a good introduction to amateur astronomy and can give you the straight dope on equipment as well.

There's a bunch of sites posting about this comet that an amateur discovered, with an amateur scope, from Russia with the last name of Elenin. What scares me is ELE is a term used in FEMA documents meaning extinction level event, and nin the female goddess(to me , mother earth).

Think this through for a minute. If this comet were going to collide with the earth, and some powerful world governments knew about it, why would they put hints in the name of the comet?

Doesn't it make more sense to assume that the fact that the first three letters of the name of the comet correspond to a FEMA acronym is a coincidence?

the question was:

Should I be Scared?

;)
.
You can't help being scared.
The sky IS falling!
If not due to this thingy, there'll be others either imaginary or real to exercise your fear of everything.
Add another mattress to your bed, and hide underneath.
But first calm the monsters that live under there also.. monsters fear obliteration also!

Fear not, in the event that it did strike the earth and cause some serious damage, our chosen leaders will go underground to protect themselves and let us all die.

Even if it doesn't, it could make a very good fear-mongering piece to work with. People tend to put aside issues they have with their government in times of an impending crisis.

Yes, some other coincidences are parallels with the movie "Deep Impact", discovered by amateur Leo, Leonid. Name Elly and Elenin, shows signs of breaking up, black prez, ...I've been reading a little somewhere it said comets from the oort cloud are usually moved out(of the Oort cloud) by some unusual force and have very long orbits. I also wonder if the tail will grow the closer to the sun it gets, and if theirs a relation to its tail and the time spent far away from the sun.

On the plus side, the comet will certainly help with California's chronic water shortages.

The only problem is that the water will be vaporized on impact, but since California will, too, there will be time to work out the details.

I'm pretty sure comets' tails always grow longer the closer they get to the sun. At least they appear longer, because there is more sunlight hitting them so they're easier to see.

i aint scared of nuttttin baby.....

The sky IS falling!
what is gravity to the sky?

ie... the sky is falling!

i aint scared but imagine if a guy like me is correct. With my attitude towards bigotted liars and the pigs who discount science to sustain their beliefs................. it is best i am just kept in the closet!

Add another mattress to your bed, and hide underneath.
do you see me hiding even with all the abuse i take from this peanut gallery?

But first calm the monsters that live under there also.. monsters fear obliteration also!

i am the monster!

It's called "gravity", you know.

Very cool site there! Why do you consider it a dud? I've been trying to find a site with some comparison statistics, like the closest a comet has come to us, and accuracy of a coming comets orbit.

A dud for naked eye observation, not as visible as say Hyakutake was, especially on the way out or Hale-Bopp.

Duh, gravity of what? Another passing star?... Gravity isn't fully understood, if it were we'd make anti-gravity and this thread wouldn't be here...:p

Um, the Oort cloud goes really far out, and some of the hyperbolic comets are from out of our solar system.

And certainly it does not take a nudge in all cases, there is no reason to assume Oort cloud objects are in stable orbits. Nearly a light year is a big area as the radius of a sphere. There could be dark rocky bodies that would perturb orbits nicely. But telling where it came from, the Oort cloud or out system is not always easy.

Anyway it looks like it won't be long before we get a better night show of a comet than Hale-bopp, reported in news a year before the event.

What religion does this "Nin" derive from? You don't mean Nin-Kasi do you, the Ancient Sumerian Goddess of alcohol? She was apparently charged with the sacred duties of "satisfying desire" and "sating the heart". One very common suspected depiction of the Goddess is a woman bent over drinking beer through a straw while she receives some carnal delights from behind courtesy of a bearded man.

Not something to fear, methinks.

I'll take that option.
Who'd want to live on a planet populated entirely by politicians?

Let us all die? Is that "let" in the sense of allowing something to happen which they could choose to prevent? What do you have in mind?

I wonder how far underground you would have to go to escape an event which was going to kill everyone else on the planet. Also, how long would you have to spend underground, and what you would eat, drink or even breathe when your supplies ran out.

I'm trying to find where I read that....anyways I like you're translation mo' better and may have found my true calling, and new, to me anyway 'cause I didn't know the ancients were familiar with beer, religion. Mesopotamian same as Sumerian?
