Shooting/attack on Michigan LDS Church

You know they kind of have a point about Mormons. The Theology is very different from just about every other Christian Sect. They don't believe in the Trinity for instance, which is one that just about every other Christian denomination requires.
That was a source of much "debate" in the early Christian sects, they even took to editing and forging the Greek texts to support the idea of the trinity.

Reports appearing in various bits of the news media that the shooter had a big dislike of Mormons, with comments like "they think they are above Jesus".

He'd also been in a relationship with a "very religious" Mormon woman, which ended badly.

Only he knows if the 2 are connected.

Well, they don't regard most non-Catholics as proper Christians, and want them all to return to the fold.
No.
All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church

There are lots of people with a big dislike of Mormons for various reasons including religious disagreement. Back in the 1800s (the last time I can recall there being any large-scale violence against a Mormon congregation) the intolerable doctrine was polygamy, which was largely only taught secretly. For nearly all, the dislike goes no further than hammering out invective on keyboards and the occasional picketing. I think something must have happened to him recently to turn this into an occasion for guns and bombs.

As much as I'd love to pile onto the comparative religion examination, that's best continued in the Religion and Philosophy section. The question, "Are Mormons Christians?" is a perennial debate subject.

According to the specific accounts reported in the Salt Lake Tribune, that happened something like ten years ago. I have no doubt this left an emotional scar, but it doesn't seem to be the precipitating event.

Well, since he was killed in a shootout with police, we'll never know.

Searchers are reporting no more bodies in the church rubble, so the death toll currently stands at four: two died by gunfire and two were found in the burned-down part of the church, their causes of death still unknown. All those who were previously unaccounted for have been accounted for. One person in the hospital is still in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, so let's hope for the best for them.

i got no problem lumping mormons in with christians. christians might not like it but what don’t they have a problem with
I figure if someone wants to call himself a Christian, who am I to tell him he isn't? I don't have a dog in that fight. The intellectual and historical aspects of the debate are interesting to me—that's all. As nearly as I can tell, all those who want to call themselves Christians can't even agree on what to look at to determine whether one is properly Christian or not. If you can't even agree on what the criteria should be, then it doesn't matter so much whether one group says another group hits or misses them.

The problem here is that the Trump regime was originally dead-set on calling this tragedy an instance of anti-Christian violence. They want to shoehorn it into the grievance narrative that says Christians in America are being heavily persecuted, ostensibly by non-Christians. But if the perpetrator turns out to have specifically targeted Mormons from a position of a mainstream Christian objection to their specific doctrine and practice, then it's just religious infighting and not the atheist-on-religion violence the Trump regime wants to project.

i agree they are trying to stoke violence and a narrative that it’s anti christian. it’s a fascist plot, so it’s stupid and obvious imo.

unfortunately they have a stranglehold over the violent gun nut weirdo demographic. eventually they’ll find their scapegoat in the constant stream of shootings. and conveniently they already have their “well if you think about it the left is mostly violent” stooges already on the case.

so it’s a really sad situation all around

There's the rub. We might have no problem considering Mormons Christians for the purpose of deciding whether this was an anti-Christian crime but what is the value of that test? If the perpetrator's motive was that his victims, unlike himself, are wicked, false Christians, then to him this crime was a pro-Christian act.

Few Christian heresies have ever been as plentifully supplied with bat
excreta craziness as mormonoidism, maybe none. But I think they've
all been full to bursting with sanctimony, i.e., with smugness and self conceit.
When you arm that with Smithite pugnacity, you can count on raising hostility
quite aside from anything doctrinal.

He was still just a weak-minded creep.

that's true i'm sure, my kids all have done active shooter drills at school. we have a yearly video at my job we have to watch about what to do but i don't pay attention to those training videos lol

The fact that you not only HAVE training videos about school shootings, but that the kids KNEW what to do- is both terrifying, and disgusting....

Not a civilised country, not somewhere anyone SANE wishes to visit- or emulate....

Sheer bloody INSANITY....

well it’s workplace shooting

and we actually had a shooting here in the 90s. guy came and killed a person and his ex girlfriend and then himself.
