Sermon: On Morality

Which is more likely?

A. A god exists who gave a set of confused and seemingly contradictory writings, and Told You What Was Good.

or

B. No god exists, and the writings are all just variations on pseudo-history that support power structures in humanity, adopting rules of civility that happened to work, by trial and error, claiming that some God told them It Was True, when in fact they just happened to work, more or less.

Or C. A number of other options.

Who is this we? You mean that YOU can't love.
What - are you saying you couldn't live in peaceful co-existence with someone you didn't love?
Besides you don't need to love them you just need to agree to allow their freedom so that you can be likewise free.
I don't understand how this differs to what I said.

Amen, brother cj!!

er..sorry that wasn't very Anglican of me.

Oh a sermon, how nice.

Commentary
On the whole it presents a listenable whimsy. Some variety might be accomplished by performing this with puppets or minimalist theater. many of the thoughts could be expressed by point-counterpoint in a humorous way. The caricature of an 'Atheist as an old goat with a cup of coffee' has potential that has only been lightly tapped.

If you have an accepting congregation beyond the jref forum, my complements at developing a following with a fine sense of humor and open mindedness.

When I was religious it was only myself and a small circle of friends that seemed to see the humor in anything at all. Without our influence 'Church' would have been very dreary, a series of internal political battles where creative ministers were marginalized; tradition and orthodoxy always finding new power and influence. My congratulations that ideas like yours are so well accepted among churchgoing believers somewhere.

The caricature of an 'Atheist as an old goat with a cup of coffee in one hand and the other on the mouse' has potential that has only been lightly tapped.

.Me, as the poster boy!

Your avatar makes me want to squash a bug on my screen but I suppose you already know that. :D

An' I do wish cj.23 well. Something that kept me away from church was not so much my not believing in the 'beliefs' anymore, but an increasing inability to want to struggle with the people. I looked around and my friends were gone, frustrated with trying to bring change to an ages old machine that was built to resist change. So me gone too, and good riddance from their pov I suppose. I am flawed and broken and just never really understood, or I'd still be there.

I suppose that something that can be laughed at can be overcome, and laughter is a powerful weapon as well as a warm blanket in the cold night that belief became. For me the inside became too unfunny and it was time to go. It was too hard to laugh at the nightmare from the inside, it is much better laughing from the outside in the light of day.
