A small-town theater owner says he wasn't trying to send Hollywood a message when he shut down for two weeks rather than show box-office leader "Jackass 2" or other new releases that he calls "drivel."
But even if not purposeful, Greg Boardman's blank-screened protest is getting a thumbs up from moviegoers who long for family fare and jeers from others who say his theaters are one of the few diversions _ especially for children _ in this farming town of about 6,000 people.

"They're not appropriate for really anybody, but I sure wouldn't let my kids go into one of them ... Those are his convictions and he needs to stand by them," Steve Lloyd, 59, of nearby Rossville said of offerings such as "Beerfest" and the "Jackass" sequel that briefly landed a "Closed" sign on the marquee outside Boardman's Lorraine Theatre.

"Jackass" features Johnny Knoxville and his gang performing crazy stunts often involving self-inflicted pain; "Beerfest" revolves around fictional siblings who participate in an Olympics-style drinking competition.

Boardman said the shutdown wasn't a veiled message to moviemakers and he doubts studios will take notice, despite national media attention that followed the temporary closing.

"I think I'm way too small to make any kind of statement to Hollywood," Boardman said.

His supporters around Hoopeston agree, though some still held onto a glimmer of hope.

"I think it was a good idea to close until he had something worth seeing," said Myra Goodrum, 51, a bus driver for Hoopeston schools. "If they made more good movies, more families would go. But I doubt Hollywood's going to notice us. We're just kind of a hole in the wall."

Does this guy not remember the last few years? There have been many so-called famly movies produced recently. Off the top of my head: Finding Nemo, Over the Hedge, Narnia, Madigascar, Wallace and Gromit, The Incredibles, Ella Enchanted, March of the Penguins, Shrek 1 and 2, and lets not forget the ultimate famly movie, The Passion of the Christ.

Isn't the demographic for first run theatre shown movies something like 13-25 year-olds?

Where was this guy when "It's Pat!" came out?

I'm sure he remembers. What his beef seems to be is the lack of any currently available movie that 1) nets him a profit while 2) corresponds to his overall, right or wrong, analysis of his market demographics and 3) does not conflict with his own moral standards.

As such, I have no beef. His business, let him run it as he so wishes.

I heard this guy on the radio, he liked the lord of the rings movies and narnia. It is that there is not a current market in his area for the movies that are presently out for that theater. It is an older theater with a up to date high end sound system. The star wars movies and other big movies fit what he wanted fine, jackass 2 does not.

On the radio he seemed most concerned with 1, he showed snakes on a plane, and there where not many people there and people walking out of a different movie because it had subtitles. It is not an art theater, and is not devoted to a large family audiace. It seems to be a pretty fair look at the demographic of his area.

1 is always my prime motovator. I've yet to see 'snakes ona plane' but I hear it's a hoot.

It was not profitable for him, but Pirates of the Carebian was. His standards don't seem that high just higher than the current movies out there can meet right now.

Maybe the idiot can show unending reruns of Davy & Goliath, Father Knows Best and The 10 Commandments until the 6,000 people in his town complain. That'll teach Hollywood!

(bolding mine)

There's his demographics right there, they walked out because they couldn't read fast enough to keep up with the movie. ;)

My point still stands that he is not the nutjob people here are complaining about. It is not a statement about recent movies only about current movies. THe summer movies are over and the winter movies have not picked up. So there is not many movies that people want to see really big with good sound.

Would you please stop being reasonable? Please?

Would you actualy spend the time finding out the owners real positions? I am going by the radio interview I heard with him and it seems pretty reasonable for his market given the movies out now. It was not that hollywood doesn't make movies he wants to show, it is that there are not any out right now.

He mentioned a multiplex not to far away, so it seems like this theater is for those who want to see it big and with good sound. That means hollywood blockbusters and jackass two isn't one of those

Ponderingturtle,

I think I figured it out. I think you thought I thought (*whew*) you were being unreasonable. Rather I was actually complementing you on your reasonableness.

(at least until you asked me a bizzare question)

Aaron

Well, somebody (I ponder like a turtle) is spoiling for a fight, even when none is to be had.

That guy is a bus driver. He has nothing to do with the movie theater.
