Sci-fi & Fantasy forums?

"Guide" was a BBC radio series before it was a book. Most Brits who bought the book would have heard the radio version or at least heard of it. I suppose the jokes about petty bureaucratic jobsworths in chapter one are very British. If you didn't get those, you might easily plough on thinking the whole thing black satire, rather than fairly light hearted SF spoof. After all, SF isn't a genre renowned for comedy.

Ha, I just played a session of that last night. Decent enough, but I don't hang out at their forums.

I used to hang out at sf-fandom. I joined it way back when it was xenite.org after the announcement of the Peter Jackson LOTR movies. Good enough forums back in the day, but they're nearly dead now.

I actually "left" that forum for this one due to the lack of participation.

I suggest Fredric Brown, Lewis Padgett, Arthur C. Clarke (Tales from the White Hart), deCamp and Pratt (Tales from Gavagan's Bar) and many more as counter to that last line. Not to mention (but I am) Pratchett.

Yeah, nothing quite compares to our activity here on JREF! We're awesome - I'll check out some of these, thanks - keep 'em coming - I'm personally particularly interested in forums that don't concentrate on a specific author or book but on fantasy & sci-fi in general. Some writing forums have sci-fi & fantasy sub-groups but they are often slow, as mentioned...

I was on the Shakespeare and Dragons forum when it was a bit more active again. But it has been gone (literally) for a couple or years now. I had a great time there, all the more because it was the forum of a podcast.

I think that when the podcast stopped, nobody felt any need to keep up posting.

I hate it when that happens.

I first read it when I was about ten or so and still high on Star Wars. My parents let me join the Sci Fi book club and that's one I got. I was under the expectation that Sci Fi was basically Star Wars/Planet of the Apes/Battlestar Galactica so HHttG confused the hell out of me. Read it again later when I was a little more sophisticated and loved it ever since.
 
There's always Baen's Bar at Baen Books for a forum. I haven't been there in a while, but it's certainly got lots of sci-fi/fantasy stuff.

For humor, there's James Schmitz (especially The Witches of Karres) and also Lois McMasters Bujold's A Civil Campaign (spit-take funny).

I wasn't lying. :D

I didn't think of them as an excessive waste of time, but I have never even remotely approached the kind of enjoyment that others have claimed from these series. Perhaps the axiom of any port in a storm, and as has been mentioned previously, there is very little good science fiction comedy (if any).
