Santorum attacks the Netherlands on euthanasia

I believe you are behind the times, there. Santorum hasn't been a senator since 2007.

Thanks for the reminder. Sometimes, people refer to office holders by their title even after they leave office, but Rick doesn't warrant that kind of respect.

I actually was pondering the same thing. Ever since he's become noticed the last week or so, he's been making some alarmingly polarizing comments.
I don't think he's trying to sabotage his campaign. Rather, I think you've identified the process in your post itself. He's always been nutty but now that the spotlight is on him, his nutty positions become more noticeable.

So, if Santorum gets the nod, how much of this stuff is he going to have to backtrack in order to try to get sane people to vote for him, or is he just trusting the base to get him elected? "Quality over quantity" doesn't make sense in national elections.

You're right, of course. I was joking when I speculated he might be sabotaging his own campaign.

I believe that Rick Santorum really does in fact want to become President of the United States.

And that he does is perhaps as frightening and outrageous as any of his whacky statements!

I haven't noticed any outrage about this statement by Santorum, at least not where I work. Most people that have heard about him in the Netherlands don't seem to take him very serious, or only know about him because of the funny google result.

If anything, euthanasia or having a say in how/when your life ends is still too restrictive here in the Netherlands. I've never heard about "Don't Euthanize Me" bracelets, but there are "Do Not Resuscitate" necklaces which most medical personnel just ignore. People end up in coma's or with severe disabilities against their wishes.

Thanks!

Wow. . .he was in profile. You'd think his nose would grow noticeably for bearing false witness like that!

Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post gives him the top rating of 4 Pinocchios. :D Rightly so.

To what extent do such statements hurt a candidate? Will his GOP competitors - or later in the race Obama if, God forbid, Santorum makes it GOP candidate - use this kind of lies to attack him?

If he'd been intelligent about scaremongering, he'd have mentioned instead the "euthanasia clinic" that is to open next month, intended to help those people with a euthanasia wish who comply with the legal standards but whose GP won't assist them.

If the GOP were a thoughtful party, they would realize very quickly that Santorum is unelectable, and at least pretend to unite behind Romney. But remember, this is the party that brought us Sarah Palin and "death panels" in recent years.

And all the Republicans have a habit of bashing Europe to pander to the republican base. How do Europeans feel about this?

From my point of view here in Europe, it does look like a serious (or semi-serious) candate for the position 'leader of the free world' is an absolute nutcase with no concept of reality. (Although, given the bloke who actually runs my country, that might be a little hypocritical on my part)

Then again, 'nutty and controversial' gets more airtime than 'considered and uncontroversial', so it's probably confirmation bias.

The only thing I haven't been able to find is a verification that Santorum said these things in the interview. I see them in articles about the Dutch outrage, but I'd like to see a transcript of that interview.

I tried to find it also because it seemed so far off from what the truth is. But I believe you can hear him saying this in the video in the opening link.

But in the end, it's the delegates at the Republican Convention (and thus now, the voters in the primaries/caucuses) who determine who gets to be the Republican candidate. Those delegates will be pledged to the candidate they were voted to support.

And the last one or two weeks, Santorum has been leading in the polls...
