San Antonio mayor links poverty, religion

Technically, on a scale of mental impairment, the two are not the same and an idiot is worse off than a moron. Though I am sure with the grace of god on her side this fool can be both an idiot and a moron at the same time.

It's two -two-two incompetencies in one!!!!! (points for remembering what this is stolen from!!!!

<snip>

At no point (and I grew up going to church) did Jesus ever say to shove a needle through a rich person's eye. Jesus healed the ear of the servant of the Roman who came to arrest him and eventually execute him. Followers of Christ may sometimes get out their swords and slice people, but Jesus doesn't do that, nor does He ever say to do that.

Apparently you haven't met St. Tragic of Monkey. Be forewarned that a lot of folks don't use smileys.

Jesus is the original inventor of the idea of turning one's cheek (Matthew 5:39-40).
And Count Chocula, I hear. (In short, no. It comes from the Torah and is usually attributed to Jeremiah. In context, he wasn't talking about an enemy but a "tormenter", so probably The Big Guy. When Imperial Sky Daddy gives you a rough time, show the other cheek 'cuz it'll all work out in the end.)

That's a nice story, of course there is nothing to support it and quite a bit of evidence to show it is probably baloney. The more commonly accepted view is that it was a mistranslated word - should be cable/rope not camel*.

OR

It could be that Jesus actually meant that it is nearly impossible for a rich person to get into heaven, and all these apologetics are merely lame excuses people have come up with to try to avoid the uncomfortable part of Jesus's teaching. Because if Jesus actually meant that rich people can't get to heaven, that makes it really hard for them to justify their greed and wealth.

This thread kind of shows the problem. "The 'real' story is that the 'eye of a needle' is just a narrow passage." No, that's ********. "OK, but the 'REAL real' story is that it's not a camel but a rope." Yeah, right. You are just desperately grasping at whatever you can to try to avoid facing the truth.

No, you're wrong. Jesus picked up acupuncture when he was living in India as a teenager. He not only healed the blind by sticking needles into their eyes, he also practiced proctology (hence the "turn the other cheek" business). As far as swordplay goes you are right, there is no textual evidence that Jesus wielded a sword at any point. He was an archer, and felled many a foe from a distance. It is said that at the battle at the crossings of Osgiliath Jesus slew fifty foes with forty arrows, which proves both his martial skills and his miraculous abilities. Some say this is proof of his divinity, but the more skeptical insist that until we disinter his corpse and check his DNA for midichlorians we can't be certain of the source of his magic.

The thread title is misleading - she links poverty with a lack of religion.

The country with the highest GOP is Qatar. That is not religious is it?

Hmm, UAE, Brunei....

Very religious. Very rich. Almost as if religion has a positive correlation with wealth.

Thank you Allah!

Interesting that you picked a bunch of countries with highly concentrated oil wealth among a few dynastic families. Within those countries, the highly religious population is very, very poor. The dudes cruising around the world on jets with Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, less so.

The exception that proves the rule...

A dream cometh with much business, and a fool's voice with many words.

A prudent man concealeth knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

Too bad the Mayor of San Antonio is a stranger to the book that stuff came from.

It's how you keep 'em down on the farm (WWI reference)!!!!!!!!

In popular retelling "Religion is the opiate of the masses". The full quote is actually much better. "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people". The shorter version is sort Marxist-Elitist. Viewing the proper quote you can see the historical spin that's been put on it. Sort of like the "basket of deplorables"; if you read the full comment, he's actually very sympathetic to the masses (just as Hillary's statement was).

Opium probably had a better reputation then too.

I disagree. I think our canine friend has just proven that God favors Islam over Catholicism. The evidence is in the bottom line. Would could be a better indication of divine favor than massive wealth bubbling up from the desert?
