Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

What is this I don't even

One facepalm just isn't enough.

Can't think of any words strong enough to describe this guy that won't be filtered out so I will just call him an idiot....

Interesting claim in the nbc article about this though

Akin emerged earlier this month from a tough three-way primary in Missouri, where he rallied social conservatives behind his candidacy. Democrats actually spent during that primary to help Akin win, viewing the six-term congressman as a less formidable challenger in the general election.

I honestly had not heard of such things before. If true, is this an often used tactic by them or both parties?

And, according to the TPM article, Akin is ahead in the polls... I can only hope the people of Missouri wake up and smell the Kool-Aid :boggled:

Btw... what Republican war on women?

He apparently misspoke, but in his statement he doesn't take back the false statement about women having these magic abilities, he just says "rape is bad and I care about women who are raped" The words sorry or apologize don't appear either! What a loser

I don't know if "often used" is accurate but I've heard of it before. As recently as this primary season, people were at least talking about donations to the Gingrich or Trump campaigns as a sure bet for Obama.

He may have "misspoke" but I can't see how this claim can be interpreted any other way than he's lying his ass off.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare,"

He didn't "mis-speak"... he got caught in a "macaca moment" and now he's trying to backpedal as quickly as possible to avoid too much political damage. Too bad for him there's this thing called the Internet.

Another weak-kneed politician who won't talk straight and substitutes lies for his real opinion. What he clearly wanted to say was this: "I don't care if a pregnancy results from rape, abortion should never be legal."

While I likely wouldn't vote for an anti-abortion candidate (I'm sure an exception would be possible, if improbable), I have a lot more respect for someone willing to stand up for what s/he believes than I do for someone willing to lie because it's politically expedient.

Not having seen any studies, I'm not even sure that there isn't a small amount of truth in his statement. I can see why it might be more difficult to impregnate a struggling woman. But even if his claim were backed up by solid science, there is still no excuse for making such a hateful, mysogenistic, boneheaded statement. Obviously some raped women get pregnant. Even if it was only one, that would be enough to make his lame reason for denying her rights an awful, hideous, maybe criminal thing to do.

And that is obvious, because Romney and Ryan were lightning-quick in saying they don't agree with him. If they had the courage to actually denounce him, I'd have more respect for them, but even such a weak gesture shows how very out of touch Akin is with the rest of the country. If this doesn't make him lose, then Missouri deserves any scorn they receive.

Normally, when I see a single, out of context, remark trumpeted as proof of a candidate's unworthiness, I look into what was said, and realize that the candidate really was trying to make a sensible point, but just spoke poorly.

This time, though, I can't figure out any way to interpret Akin's remarks as anything other than just plain stupid.

Indeed, worse than just plain stupid. I think it has to be a reflection of someone who has tried to make reality fit his ideological needs. He really wants pregnancies to be the fault of the pregnant woman, so he can't admit that sometimes, it isn't.

In this case, it isn't typical "gotcha" journalism. I think the candidate let his true colors show here, and they aren't pretty.

If this was part of the "war on women", he'd be arguing something along the lines of "it was there fault" or "they need to just deal with it". This is the result of ignorance, and probably the result of the war on science - one more step along the path to the burgeoning idiocracy.

It's a pretty obvious callback to the days when a victim's physical arousal was considered to constitute consent.

"If she got pregnant then she must have wanted it!"
