Touching on the conspiracy theories - it could be that we are seeing more stories like that reported in our media. The motive for that may just be that Iran is a topical subject. 12 months ago "we" weren't that interested in Iran so most newspapers had no real motive to print Iranian stories. The media is led by public opinion and interests as well as trying to lead them (or at least anticipate them so they can gain an audience).
