Queensland Floods

Ah-ha. I'm on tapatalk and thought for some reason Gumboot lived in Australia. Need a memory booster..

Dont worry - on facebook both Australia and New Zealands relationship is simply listed as complicated ;)

I live in Brisbane, but fortunately my house wasnt affected, but the office was. Couldn't get access for 3 days. Went on the weekend to help out at Ipswich. Man, that place is wrecked.

Here is a cool before an after of some of the flood affected areas.

Anyways, the finger pointing has started & those with 20/20 hindsight, armchair experts & know it all's have plenty to say.

Before the flood, the news was filled with "Why are you letting so much water out of the dam?!! Its a waste of our taxpayers money!!"

After the flood, expert engineers declared they should have released much more water.

Maybe, precisely the amount that the dam filled up by? Would that have done you nicely? We could also use a time machine to dam the river that bypassed the dam eh? Or tell sir Joh he needed to build Wivenhoe....before the 1974 flood, but also higher.

ABC international mention that the Brisbane, Pakistan & Brasil floods could be affected by climate change & the Rockhampton mayor mention climate change is involved.

Yet, the main stream media dodges it entirely & instead gets in politcal experts instead of scientists to discuss it.

A magician informs us why it's not climate change.

The Australian is pushing very strongly the line that "more than 80%" of the flooding in Brisbane was due to the way Wivenhoe was operated. And in a fairly obvious bit of framing they're reporting that Bligh "bowed to pressure" in calling the enquiry. Back to politics as usual.

Anyone who follows the Weatherzone forum will be interested in this story featuring an interview with one of the resident meteorologists:

Weather watchers tipped Lockyer danger

Don't get it  Isn't that what hurricanes are called in the Pacific?

Strictly speaking, the correct term is a tropical cyclone. Locally, in the Atlantic and NE Pacific they're called Hurricanes, while in the NW Pacific they're called Typhoons. In the rest of the world (i.e. the Southern Pacific) they're just Cylones.

And no, it wasn't a cyclone, although the horrific weather appears to have settled a little and will mostly miss Auckland (we have rain and gust of up to 60km/h but nothing serious). Not many cyclones make it as far south as NZ, but we do get Tropical storms that have been down-graded from Cyclones. This particular storm was the result of two former Cyclones merging into one quite large and nasty Tropical Depression. I see the upper South Island (which suffered bad flooding just after Christmas) is forecast to receive 200-250mm over the next 48hrs.

I'm not sure how releasing more water into the Brisbane valley would have resulted in less flooding...

Aside from which the Brisbane River isn't the only catchment area that suffered severe flooding. Nothing they could have done with that dam would have affected the other flood areas.

Correct, but it's not going to stop the lawyers having a field day, and pocketing their $3000 a day fee at the Royal Commission.

Some say it came from here:
I reckon it's even older than that, you could probably date it back to Port Arthur or Penal Sydney.
I would imagine it comes from trying to settle on a continent where the flora, fauna, and weather are all constantly conspiring to eradicate humans.

If you don't stick together, you will certainly die alone.

I just heard that 14 of this years West Tigers squad are heading for Ipswich for a couple of days of clean up.

Great gesture boys

One of my workmates was flooded in Ipswich, and a heap of her colleagues went to clean it up on the weekend.

Looks like a few other clubs in on this as well, Penrith, Bulldogs, Parramatta. Both the QLD clubs are all over it with volunteer and financial help

I am not sure whether the water issues my relatives had was due to heavy rain and a hole in their roof, or flooding.
