Psychic Kids on A&E

Wow, these are supposed to be genuinely psychic kids? I assumed when I saw the previews for this during one of about 8 zillion CSI:Miami episodes that it was some sort of stupid drama program done in documentary style.

That's really disgusting.

My Father is a very skeptical person. My mother (and her side of the family) are not. They are all devout Christians.

My parents got divorced when I was a teen. My Father remarried about 10 years ago. To a wonderful woman whom I like very much.

However, as today is Father's Day, I saw my Dad. At one point in the conversation, my Step Mother said there was a new show coming out on Monday night that she was very excited for.

Not knowing when this was on, I said "Oh really, what's that?"

She of course said "Psychic Kids".

I don't know what to do when this happens. She has, in the past, expressed her belief that that charlatan John Edwards is real. But I ignored it. As this was Father's Day, I didn't want to start a potential argument. So I just said "huh" as in "oh, that's intersting" and let it go.

I wonder why my Dad keeps ending up with women who believe in nonsense.

Heres something better! Now whos's bringing out their alleged psychic abilities, well of course another alleged psychic. I am sure that if there is any testing done, it will be, can you get all the information you need from the audience member.

I emailed my complaint with A&E through their website and I encourage you all to do the same.

Here is what I wrote:

"I am deeply offended by how little your network thinks of its audience that you chose to air a show that so obviously exploits the fantasy life of children under the guise of a serious documentary about "psychic kids." There's nothing impressive about a child making up a name of an imaginary friend and then later discovering that someone who lived an hour away 150 years ago happened to possess that name who really had a mother named "Catherine" and someone else in their family named "Sarah." This is basic cold reading and retro-fitting of broad predictions. This show is shameless and I assure you that as long as it continues to run on your network, I will not watch your network."

That's all we need, a new crop of Sylvia Brownes.

Yeah that crossed my mind too.

The things they did to those kids I thought was borderline criminal. I don't know who this Chip Coffey guy is, but when he told that child the truth was she was 'haunted'... I worry this kind of thing could mess them up for a long time.

I also worry that this kind of show opens the floodgates for more paranormal shows involving children. It is also another vector for adult psychics to try to gain respect and credibility from the public: if the audience believes the kids are psychic or haunted, and an adult psychic can clarify that and help the child, then the adult MUST be authentic!

This show should be called, "Fat lonely women wrongly encourage their kids' fantasies in order to get attention."

Child abuse.

I couldn't agree more. What kind of people would exploit their children in that way?? Oh wait.... I guess people who want to be on tv and get attention are willing to exploit their children. :eye-poppi

It's sad because the little bit I did watch gave me the impression these kids are attention seekers as well and have started to believe their own stories. You have these parents feeding the fantasy, I mean geez, what a fantastic way to make your fantasy become reality.

I can't imagine what is going to be aired on tv next.

When kids lie or get too involved in their fantasy lives, good parents try to reel them back in. Bad parents encourage that behavior and exploit it for attention, while doing possibly grave harm to the development of their children.

This is actually the most disturbing "paranormal" show I have ever seen. It is one thing when adults choose to involve themselves in this kind of crap, but quite another to involve innocent children. This could really harm these kids for a long time.

From what I saw this went way beyond indulging fantasies that the children may have already had. I don't believe that the little girl who said she talked to "Freddie Stuart" came up with that on her own and it just happened to match the name of a boy whose Mother had the name "Catherine". That information was known beforehand and actively planted by some means. The most innocent way I can imagine (outright asking her to lie) is already filthy; if it was planted by other means, it just gets worse.

This seriously makes me sick...
