Okay, got a new(er) PC, formatted hard drive, no probs, run setup for windows ME:

Message SU0013
--------------
To set up Windows Me, your startup drive must be an MS-DOS
boot partition. If your startup drive is formatted as HPFS
or NTFS, you must create an MS-DOS boot partition before
running Setup. For more information about creating an
MS-DOS boot partition, see your computer documentation.

Doing a limited amount of fiddling, I think my drive is NTFS.
How do I create an MS-DOS boot partition?

Thanks

Boot from floppy and run fdisk. Create a partition big enough for ME and use the rest for a NTFS partition. There are some good tools around to help - you can buy Partition Magic which I've used a lot in the past or there are some free ones around.

I don't seem to be able to create partitions larger than 8mb using fdisk.

Will partition magic work in DOS?

Panic over.

I just needed to delete the NTFS partition, and create a new FAT32 one.

Still, I got some useful knowledge, could be good as I'm considering a career in IT.

What I want to know is, why didn't they tell me how to convert my hard drive at college? I'm doing computing A level.

What I want to know is why they didn't tell you never to install Windows ME.

This is not some anti M$ snobbery on my part. I have used MSDOS 3.0 - 6.22, Win 3.1, Win 95, Win 98, Win98SE, Win ME and Win XP home and Pro.

Of all these, the only one with absolutely no saving graces so far as I could see, was Windows ME.

It's a cludge.

98SE was more stable and easier to use. XP home is both more stable and more versatile. And as a student, you can buy it cheap.

Is there some reason you must use ME?

I can always think of something more worthwhile spending my money than a new OS.....

Eventually (probably when I go to Uni) I'll buy a new PC that will probably come with XP.

Anyway, as I said, with all the problems I've had with windows ME, I've learned a hell of a lot. :D

I assume you are talking about one of those computers where you have to click on "Start" if you want to shut it down?

*runs and hides behind his gay iMac*

Oh so very much do I say "DITTO!" And I would add my voice to the suggestion you go to a recent NT-based Windows (Win2K or XP).

Windows ME must be the most UNinstalled program in recent history. Really, on the very same hardware you can run Win2K or XP and it will be heaps faster, more stable, reliable and kludgeproof, and it has all the support for most peripherals you will ever need. And your layered software runs better and more reliably too. Plus most modern games. Plus lots more betterer stuff thrown in for free.

Win2K and XP are not totally bulletproof, but they're a vast improvement over ME. Don't hesitate!

Oh, and yes, I too like the Mac OS! :D

Well, I can't argue with that!
