Earlier tonight a German friend wrote me and gave me this little slice of her every day life. Early this morning as she and her mom was having breakfast and reading the newspaper, there was an article in the paper of Ötzi the Iceman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ötzi saying that they think that Ötzi might not have been murdered after all, but that there might be other reasons for his demise. My friend's mom, who is a JW, snorted contempsuosly at that and said: "I can't believe how stupid they are, Ötzi was of course running from the Biblical flood!!"

My friend said she just turned the page and started talking about other things and that luckily her mom was distracted away from it, as she had no desire to go there that early in the morning. I had to laugh at this though, I got this cartoon-like image in my head of a cave-man running for his life with a big tsunami wave right at his heels :D

Before she managed to distract her away from it though, my friend said that her mom mentioned a year that this was suppose to have happened. Is this something that some Christian groups thinks? That Ötzi died in the flood?

I thought he got shot with a bow and arrow through his back. Maybe god was mad that this wicked man was running from his righteous wall of water and decided to blast him instead of letting him drown.

:D

God: "Running for the Alps, uh? Oh no, that won't work, where's my bow!?"

If he was fleeing the flood, then why wouldn't there be thousands of bodies up there? Or maybe he was the only one smart enough to run.

He must have been! :) Yeah, it was not exactly the smartest thing her mom has said I think  that's why I wonder if this idea is a common notion among some Christians.

:jaw-dropp

That's by far one of the most ignorant things I've ever read. I think I've forgot my phone number now.

Your friend's mother should be honoured.

With a stundie nomination. :)

I haven't heard if creationists have tried to explain Otzi, but if they have, I'm sure they would latch onto that as a plausible explanation. Life is so much simpler that way, isn't it? (And so dull. How could they not get excited about the actual archaeology that came from discovering Otzi?)

Yeah, you're right. My first reaction was laughter. I must have laughed for a full two minutes when I read my friend's mail, but really, it is really sad.

Huh? I heard years ago he might have just slipped and broke his legs or something like that! :p

Could be. I haven't read up on exactly what the different theories as to what happened to him really are, that's what my friend said the article said, but I am sure it wasn't the biblical flood in any case :)

I should read up on it though, as someone said, what really happened, and what such a find might teach us is fascinating enough.
