Evidently, PETA had some kind of celebration where they gave interestingly-named "Humanitarian Awards" to various people, presumably for being famous while giving money to PETA (or something).

Alec Baldwin says that we should "eat less animals". I can't believe the nerve of this guy. He acts like we all greedily and inconsiderately eat entire animals, instead of just a small part.

Wait... I thought PETA stood for People Eating Tasty Animals?

Snort. Alec Baldwin is telling us to eat less? Seen a mirror lately, Alec?
Hold on now, I'll have you know I'll probably never be half the man he is, show some respect for his ego.

Just watched the video and learnt something new and now need to make an apology.

On behalf of my country we are really, really sorry

It wasn't your fault. I mean, some other things were certainly the UK's fault in some way or other, but not this. Walk tall.

Reminds of an interview I once saw with Chi McBride*, in which he revealed he is a vegetarian. It was on a late night show (don't remember which one) so the interviewer responded with a quip about his weight (Chi is not a petite man). His response was something like "No meat in Ice Cream" (Chi is apparantly not a vegan)

*ETA: he played Vogler on House (season 1 or 2)

Hey, if Darat want's to take the blame on behalf of the UK, let him. Lets the rest of us off the hook. :D

I think he meant "fewer" animals.

I'd like to suggest he berate fewer children, then get back to me.

Nah. I remember a 60 Minutes story ages ago about frog or toad crossing signs across the pond. Every driver slowed down and/or stopped to let the critters continue on their way.
:frogsat:

That was in France. They didn't want to spoil the eaters.

Hmm, is it wrong to have an Ice Cream Mars bar for breakfast.
And thank you for the Vogler annotation, I've had no idea who the man was otherwise.

Wow, she complained to Arafat about using a donkey to deliver a bomb? Has she demanded Russia erect a monument to their anti-tank dogs?
It's not your fault, every country spawns kooks.

PETA is a horribly run organization. Newkirk is nuts. But. Still. It's good to see people speaking out about animal cruelty. If anyone's interested in learning more about why v*gans have gripes with factory farming, factoryfarming.com seems to be a pretty good resource. Also, some of Peter Singer's work on the subject is good.

PETA is far worse than just a horribly run organization, IMO. I agree that they do speak out about animal cruelty, but their philosophy is based on animal rights. Other organizations speak of animal welfare.

And there's this pesky little report:

That's what Checkmite's comment was sarcastically alluding to. Also, I don't think the UK should apologize for Ingrid Newkirk if Australia doesn't have to apologize for Rupert Murdoch.

Why is that bad?

It's frustrating how people link to dishonest agitprop in every one of these threads. Particularly given that the major complaint in this one seems to be that PETA has celebrity supporters, and that Alec Baldwin is fat. What's the relevance?

To the extent that PETA kills animals, their reasons for doing so are credible, and roughly consistent with mainline animal welfare organizations (most SPCAs also kill animals). You would think this would make animal welfarists more comfortable with them, rather than less.
