Confession is good for the soul, but the police aren't here to "forgive".

Poor, stupid retard. In Texas, no less!

Well, they won't kill him after confessing, but he has essentially thrown TWO lives away now. First his victim's, and now his own.

Redemption and a newspaper coupon will get you a candybar, mister!

Of course, it is handy manipulating criminals (lowest common denominator sorts of people, in general) with faith. Another fine reason why we "need" a religion with a confession cult built in: so stupid people will confess to crimes.

Interestingly, there is also the "false confession" phenomena to deal with. Sometimes when someone is feeling self destructive and (in other ways) responsible for a loved one's death, they will confess to a murder. Maybe he reacted badly to he pregnancy and left, then she killed herself, and now in his remorse he's looking for a way to 'atone'.

If this is the case, here's a guy who's totally screwing himself, and the only thing that will "save" him is if the prosecutor and police investigate his confession thoroughly before the trial formality begins. Fat chance they will. They have a confession in the bag, the taxpayers don't want to pay for an investigation, so go directly to prison for the rest of your life, do not pass "Go", do not collect $200. The creative details about how 'meticulous' he was will only guarantee premeditation and no parole.

The state SHOULD investigate the confession for their own good. After all, this very well documented 'false confession' phenomena could be used as the basis of an appeal, later. Best to make SURE the guy didn't have an alibi (i.e. out drinking with friends in another state) when the girl died before you take it to trial and sentense a stupid and self-destructive, but generally innocent man.
 
I think it's a good thing. I mean you got stupid people always doing dumb things after watching a movie--either emulating the movie, ala "Fast and the Furious" or that other movie some years ago where thoses guys did that dare and lay in the center of the road to copy that movie and got run over.

Someone watching a movie and motivated to do something good is nice for a change. Sure he may get a needle in his arm, but he stepped up to the plate and took responsibility.
 
I was at lunch over the weekend with my aunt, who lives in Wichita, and apparently that lady who died of a heart attack while watching PAssion, the first one, PEggy Lee what's her name or something, anyhow... I guess she turned out to have been my aunt's roommate in school. Small world, eh?

My aunt says she'd had plenty of health problems, but I'm sure that also came out in the reports at the time. I just think it's cool that I'm so "close" to it. Six degrees of seperation and all that...

Damn, Riddick, I agree with you.

Dave almost sounds like he thinks the guy shouldn't have talked. If he did the crime, it's *great* that he confessed. In theory, it's great even for him, since now he can get the help and reform the system is there to provide.
 
Re-read my actual post (not the snippet that riddick quoted out of context) and tell me how I don't acknowledge that religion has a good use here.

What you both still neglect: What if he didn't commit the crime he confessed to?

It sounds pretty implausible that someone dumb enough to murder his girlfriend would pull off the "perfect crime".

My philosophy about this is simple: If you're not going to be able to live with yourself after killing someone, then don't kill them.

If all you're going to do after your homicide is turn yourself in afterwards, I have a much better idea for you that will save everyone a lot of trouble: KILL YOURSELF, instead. Now all your troubles with that person are no longer an issue, and the state doesn't have to pay feed and house you for the next 50~70 years, and that person, their family and friends, and everyone else can go on with their lives. It's not like having a family member spending life in prison for murder will be any better for your own family, friends, etc. than a suicide.

So, what would be better? One suicide, or a murder and permanent incarceration?

Sheesh!

An interesting bit of trivia popped up on my RADAR. The three states with the largest prison populations, as measured by people in prison per 100,000 citizens have the death penalty, while the three states with the lowest prison populations do not have the death penalty. Not that it actually means anything.
 
One thing I'm not proud of Texas is that we have the highest execution rate in the nation. I think that's both in sentencing and carrying out of executions. YYYEEEEEEEEHHHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

I don't believe in capital punishment because our judicial system is not perfect and innocent people have been executed before.
I don't think the miniscule reduction in murders justifies killing an innocent wrongfully sentenced.

Oh yea. we even have a web site that lists all the pepole what have been or waiting to be executed. It even tell what thier last meals were. I 'll post it if I find it.

So, apparently this guy has gotten over his Jesus thing, and now he's pleading 'not guilty'.

False confession looks like it's creeping in.

Way to torment the girl's family, too. Girl kills self, no boyfriend did, no not really!
 
He's not denying he did it (yet), from what I've read the not guilty plea was entered so that he wouldn't forfit specific rights (cross examination, blah blah blah). I saw an interview with his lawyer some weeks ago and the guy was just...extremely unhappy with his client. (He had done a radio interview earlier that day I believe confessing yet again).

Anyway if the guy doesn't recant, my guess is he'll basically play to the jury for the lightest possible sentence, or even attempt for a jury nullification (which is soooo not going to happen).

Interesting stat. I think the correlation has more to do with the "tough on crime" culture that exists in those states.
