Orbs #2 in the commentary

Orbs are not shadows, they're blurred reflections of light: the light source is usually the camera's flash, which bounces light off the dust particles and back into the camera. Because the camera isn't focused on the dust particles they appear blurred.

This is so much a part of the visual language of films now that I've heard animators will draw in this lens artifact.
