Just figured out and fixed the problem. In system preferences > speech > spoken user interface > Other spoken items, i deselected the "Selected text when the key is pressed" box. Problem solved. I feel like an idiot now since I'm the one who caused the problem in the first place!

Solution? It was only a 'problem' because he'd set things up like that. It's like putting your dinner plates in the boot of your car, forgetting, and then complaining how long it took to find them...
