Depends if it originated in the US. Non-US spelling for that is "trawling".
"Trolling" uses a hook and line and usually catches one fish per line.
"Trawling" uses a big net and catches a whole bunch of fish at once.
The words (to pedantic fishermen at least) are not interchangeable, regardless of where they live. Just out of curiosity, I looked round and can't even confirm that the two words are even related. Like most people, I just assumed one was a mispronunciation of the other that had grown to mean something else.
"Troll" seems to come from a word meaning 'walk or run with short steps' while trawl is derived from a word meaning 'drag'.
So, if your internet comment only angers one person, you're trolling. If it generates a whole thread of rage, then you're trawling.
