Seriously. You can't make this stuff up!

NRA Video Game

Listen - I know that you're not shooting anybody like in Call of Duty or whatever, but the timing is (not surprisingly) suspect. The grand-poobah of the NRA was just on the TV complaining about these.

Un:rule10:real.

:boggled:

I saw better graphics in Medal of Honor: Allied Assault 11 years ago.

"Sure, they're not shooting at humans, but does it really matter?"

Why yes, yes it does. Unless you believe that target shooting is just practicing killing, which isn't valid.

Either way, a game simulating target practice is as close to reality as a game simulating running.

Why else does a hunter practice shooting? Why are targets shaped like human's or animals available? I will give you Olympic target practice and trick shooting, two things few gun owners do.

The only reason I practice shooting is to be good with my weapon if I ever have to use it in self defense or to kill an animal. Anybody that doesn't practice killing with their guns is a fool, for at least in my state shooting to maim is a crime.

Rifle or pistol range - human or animal target.
Skeet - Flying animals or super heroes.

Target practice can be a great deal of fun but it is deadly serious.

I shoot at targets to be good at shooting at targets. It's pretty much for its own sake.

As much disgust as I have for the NRA, and as much I would support the repeal of the 2nd amendment, I don't see hypocrisy here.

I doubt even the NRA would say that nonviolent video game activities, especially those that don't involve any "killing" at all, are a cause of gun violence. Dumb-Dumb Wayne's speech referred to Grand Theft Auto, not Q*Bert.

Further, the NRA wouldn't suggest that an iPad/iPhone videogame could teach proper gun safety and/or skill; they like real guns and ammo too much to offer unreal substitutes. Thus, this game is simply intended as a hopefully entertaining promotional/money-making tool.

Maybe I'm not as anti-gun as I thought I was, but I don't consider to be at all violent shooting a videogame gun at videogame targets that don't even attempt to simulate living creatures.

Actually, that's exactly what they're saying:

The free app, recommended for ages 4 and up, according to the iTunes rating system, “offers a 3D shooting game that instills safe and responsible ownership through fun challenges and realistic simulations,” says the app’s description. “It strikes the right balance of gaming and safety education, allowing you to enjoy the most authentic experience possible.”

Organization that believes video games influence gun values releases video game that they hope will influence gun values. News at Eleven.

I'm going out on a limb here and suggesting that if anything the "violent video games" that LaPierre decried like the dumbass he is made firearms more familiar to gamers than anything his organization could have done.

That does seem to be a pretty major distinction. The NRA game doesn't glamorize killing people, nor treat killing people like a game.

I'd get the outrage if the NRA had released a video game called "2012 urban assault"... but they didn't. This seems like people have gotten so used to being outraged at the NRA that whatever the NRA does sparks a 2-minute hate.

That actually sounds fun.

The NRA does do good things WRT gun safety programs. Credit where it's due.

Maybe you would prefer this one.

“I really want to shoot Wayne LaPiere in the head in a video game because I’m pissed about how he and others on his side have blamed violence on video games,” the game’s creator wrote. ”This’ll ultimately be a bonus level in the final game, but I want to get it done and released ahead as quickly as possible, in part because I wanna see the man wet his pants on television and bitch about being victimized in a video game.”

I'm about as pro-guns as it gets, but the NRA's recent wave of idiocy almost makes me want to side with the anti-guns crowd (almost :) ). Talk about crappy spokespeople.

If I do end up moving to Vermont when I retire (blue state with red state-like weapons laws, best of both worlds), I hope I can find a different, sane gun org to join, because the NRA has effectively turned me off of itself for life.
