Read about this interesting incident today, and it has some bearing on the policies and actions of NORAD regarding threats from outside the continent.

A bomb threat aboard a Cathay Pacific flight bound for Vancouver (YVR) from Hong Kong (HKG) resulted in an intercept by CF18's from Comox, BC.

I was interested to read this statement from NORAD Major Holly Apostoliuk 'The fighters have the ability to respond to security threats with measures including lethal force if necessary. They flew alongside the passenger jet until it landed safely around 1:40 p.m.'

They chose not to shoot the plane down, thankfully. All passengers made it safely. If NORAD were to follow the logic (sarcasm) and instructions of many 9/11 Truthers, this plane should have been shot down immediately before it could inflict damage on anyone else.....

The controllers will attemp to contact the pilots. Pilots have certain "duress" words and
phrases (which are secret) which can be inserted in conversations to signal ATC that
hijackers are present. ATC will tell pilots to execute certain turns as means of signaling
that they are in control of the A/C

Fighters will signal the pilots by flashing navigation lights to "follow me" and see if plane will comply

There are myriad ways ATC and air defense can contact an aircraft and determine if it
has been hijacked and is under control of hijackers.
