Yesterday I had audio in my computer. Today I have no audio. There is no audio coming out of my computer. There is no Audio Icon on the desktop. If I go to the Control Panel and click on "Sounds and Audio Devices", I can't select anything and on the top it reads "No audio device".

How can this happen from one day to the next without me doing anything????

(I use Windows XP by the way)

Do you have an added-on audio card, or are you using the stock software item?
Sure your control panel didn't get accidentally muted?

All the volume sliders on the control panel all the way up?

If you have a card-check your "device manager".

I've had Device Manager tell me that my SB Live! 1024 was working properly when the "Sounds & Audio Devices" applet was telling me that there was no audio device present, I tried removing the card & drivers, then I re-installed both - I even fitted the card in another machine that until then had only the on-board audio - absolutely nothing - I did the only other thing I could think of.....

I bought another soundcard.

Had a similar problem. Try uninstalling and re-installing your driver.

fn drivers. :mad:

1) Determine what sound card you have (Everest Home edition is a good 'un)

2) If it's not a Creative* then go to manufacturers site and download latest drivers to the desktop.

3) Reboot system and start in safe mode - when it beeps start tapping F8 until you get the startup menu, use the arrow keys to choose "safe mode" and hit enter

4) Click Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device manager. If there are any question marks on the list Right click and Uninstall. If there's anything under "Sound, video and Game controllers" click the plus, Right click and remove everything from there.

5) Reboot

6) When Windows starts cancel all attempts to "Search for new drivers",

7) once it's thrown it's little spat double click on the drivers you've downloaded. Follow the instructions.

8) test.

*If it's a creative then follow to step 6, go to Creative.com, click support then choose "Software autoupdate". Allow it to run Java apps and what have you. Grab a coffee.

If the above doesn't work then....
9) If you have a separate soundcard (the sockets run horizontally) then take the side off your PC and move the card to a different socket and retry the above. If it still doesn't work then it may be hosed, check 11

10) If the soundcard is integrated into the motherboard then a full reinstall of windows may fix it or check 11

11) You can pick up a separate for $25 and change

Actually, after that happened I did a scan with the AVG anitvirus, I deleted the adware it found (none of them were more than moderately harmful) and now the audio is working again.

Could it possibly be true that adware can deconfigurate audio?

Yes, I see that you're a New Yawka; no problem. ;)

(just messing w/you - I kind of like the new word)

You will have to pay copyrights if you ever intend to use, though.

...

So? Is it possible or not? No one ever answered my question.
