Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of Nick Pope, perhaps the UK's leading UFO expert (see http://www.nickpope.net/index.html)?

During 1991-1994 he was the UK Ministry of Defence's UFO Desk Officer. Since then, however, he has been milking it for all it's worth. I'm trying to decide whether he was just a relatively lowly MOD official given the mundane job of handling and filing UFO reports, or if he was indeed "the real Fox Mulder", fearlessly investigating the unknown, as popularly depicted by the media.

Anyone know?

Hex,

This is pretty much what I've heard about him too.
What always made me wonder about him is why he thinks he is uniquely qualified to investigate UFO claims?
He has no scientific or investigative background, other than the time he spent at the MOD. He's just a pen pusher who was promoted way beyond his talents.

He also claims to be skeptical but like a lot of UFO hunters he likes to leave a hook like 'most UFO sightings can be explained away but there are a handful of cases which defy normal explanation....'

Hex/Oleron,

Those are pretty much my feelings too. It sounds like he was a pretty junior pen-pusher, put in an exciting-sounding but probably mundane post (I guess the MOD needed someone to shuffle and file the UFO reports they were receiving), who has been misrepresenting and exploiting his position ever since.

A personally annoying example of his self-promotion. From the biography on his web site: "I’m a Senior Executive Officer, which is a civilian grade equivalent to the military rank of Lieutenant Colonel." Sounds good. Well, I used to work for the British Government too, and as a graduate I was amused to discover that I was apparently equivalent to a Captain. Wow! But this was purely an administrative thing - of course I didn't have the skills, training or stature of a military Captain, and neither I nor anyone I knew would ever dream of implying such.

Just one reason I find Nick Pope an annoying little *** :p

He's coming in Paris in March (2007), for the "Repas Ufologique Parisien" ("Paris's Ufological Dinners").

It's seems it will be a huge ufological event and the promotion of him is going very well on the French ufological forums. He's "Mr. UFO", and he's presented like if it was the biggest expert in Great-Britain.

Well, I'll be there, but I'm already bored.

At least, there will be a lot of "famous" kinda fellow of the ufological and parapsychological French community and I'm gonna chat with them... It'll be fun.

As it used to be in the Civil Service whilst I was there:
Admin Assistant = Private
Admin Officer = Corporal
Executive Officer = Sergeant
Senior Executive Officer = Sergeant Major (if efficient)/Lieutenant (if completely hopeless)
It ought to be noted that the higher ranks of Civil Service officer in my department (the DoSS) were completely out-of-touch Ivory Tower residents who barely knew what was occurring on a day-to-day basis. Hence Mr Pope is hoist with dual petards.

Also, knowing CS staff, I can't imagine Enormous UFO Secret Info not percolating around departments via grapevine, and from there to the real world pretty quickly.
