You know, I've been wondering: why haven't the Mythbusters crew tackled any of the 9/11 conspiracy topics? Surely they must be aware of these CTs? They know just about every urban legend out there.

I suppose it's due to the sensitive nature of the topic. Still, don't you think it'd be neat to see them take on a few of the Truth Movement's claims? It might be more effective than simply arguing with them. I mean, you can spend all day and night discussing theories about what might happen, but it's quite another thing to actually see things with your own eyes. That's precisely what the Mythbusters do. They don't debunk urban legends with theory and talk. They debunk them with action. With spectacular experimentation, sometimes at risk to themselves. If a TM claim were debunked by an actual experiment, the truthers would have to deny their own eyes to evade it.

Obviously Mythbusters couldn't address every single claim with their limited resources, methods, and episode time. But, there's a few things they might be able to put to the test:

--High-altitude cell phone use / voice modification
--Pulverized concrete (test by smashing concrete blocks in a variety of ways and see if the consistency of the concrete "dust" can be achieved)
--Thermite (see how it actually behaves against steel)
--Demo charges (test the effectiveness of various types of explosives against steel columns similar to those in the WTC)
--Squibs (using a small WTC scale model, attempt to reproduce the squibs first using explosives, then using some kind of air pump or piston)
--Strength of steel with increasing temperature
--There's probably a couple other things they could test that I can't think of right now.

It'd make for a pretty good episode, I think.

They have a standing "No 9/11 Stuff" on their fan website.

I don't blame them, frankly. We've all seen here just how irrational, vocal, and even threatening the conspiracy goons can be towards anyone who "busts" their wild ideas. Also, they'd be secondary compared to actual investigations.

Great show, by the way. I know of no other show that so thoroughly walks through the real scientific method, complete with missteps, surprises, and occasionally the need to acknowledge that, hey, maybe we were wrong?

In the Pyramid Power episode, Adam said "Can we please not do any more oogie-boogie myths." I think they'd probably classify 9-11 as oogie-boogie.

I've been a huge fan of the show since it first started.

It doesn't surprise me about the "no 9-11 stuff" policy. It would just get wayyyy too expensive and wayyyy too complicated to try to answer all the questions troofers spit out.
They do such a great job of proving or disproving (through actually building the devices needed) the many mainstream and urban rumors wrong (or right)....though I have to admit it is soooo much fun watching when they get to blow something up. (maybe a bit reminiscent of watching my uncles blow up stumps, rocks, etc...with dynamite when I was a child):p

Totally unnecessary. Why should ANYBODY have to waste their time satisfying people that

A. wouldn't recognize science if it bit them in the rule10.
B. Only believe youtube videos that are posted by other truthers.
C. Mean nothing in the scheme of things.

Given the amount of e-mails they got when they challenged the theory that a tailgate down on a truck will improve your MPG, I can only imagine what a group of people with no lives would flood the site with.

Probably the same death threats that were made against Danny Bonaduce's daughter after his smackdown of John Connor (Mark Dice).

It's too much trouble and the light hearted nature of the show would only anger viewers if they tackled 9/11.

I also dont blame them. If CTs get apoplexic about Popular Mechanics, imagine the flak they would direct at Mythbusters.

Yeah, I agree. Love the show, would love them to do a 9/11 ep, but the crazies would be threatening their kids or families or whatever.

Best let the crazies believe what they want.

I think the biggest argument against it is that it wouldn't convince anybody.

And as much as anything, they probably think it would be perceived as spectacularly bad taste to do such a show, even given given their natural irreverence.

Science and hotness...it's a winning combination.

I seem to recall hearing that they may be addressing the Moon Hoax Landing Theory (or at least some portion of it) in a future episode.

They have said that if money and time were no object, they'd like to tackle the Apollo missions "hoax" theories... By going to the moon.

I agree with the others - it would do no good. The truthers would simply claim that the test was done wrong, or that the issue was not really important anyway, etc. Given the fact that there is almost no point that all the truthers agree on just makes it worse.

The Mythbusters folks were at TAM last year - will they be again?
