My State

You could be in California. We're drowning in debt, cities are declaring bankruptcy, and our politicians are pushing high speed rail and banning foie gras.

And, per NPR today, shark fin soup!!:jaw-dropp

(Ooops, never mind, I don't eat shark-fin soup..... Carry on!!

I hope the Hare Krishnas make the most of that new law. The fundies would be tripping over themselves to get it repealed.

Steve S

Hare Krishnas, my ass. Let´s find the fundiest Muslims in the state and encourage them to hold prayer sessions in public.

I wish it was only an Onion piece. It's not.

Meanwhile, in our own great state of Alabama, our PBS network is currently embroiled in controversy over the firings of executives opposed to the broadcast of a documentary by Christian Fundamentalist liar-about-history David Barton. Not to mention the fact that we're probably going to get this guy as our Chief Justice. Again.

We should have our own "My state" thread >.>

By the way, bravo on finding this stuff because I was googling a storm but couldn't find the keywords. Also I just emailed my grievances to APTV over Barton's revisionist programming. Here's hoping they read it.

That's not such a bad thing - killing sharks for SFS is so devastating to the oceans as ecosystems that banning it worldwide would be a long-term smart move.

Golly, what a thought. I've been so focused on being miffed about such things, I forgot my daughter will surely benefit if this crap catches on a bit more. She'll be eminently more hire-able!
I tell my wife, employees, and kids this sort of thing all of the time. "Don't get p*ssed off by the idiots! Be glad that they're your competition!!"

The Hare Krishna thing may prove interesting. We had a rather heavy presence in the area some years back, with people complaining bitterly about being accosted at the airport. They actually passed an ordinance and effectively drove them out.
Unconstitutional now, I would imagine.
As well, a large group of the folks would dress up in their sffron robes and sing and dance in the street in the local "Loop" area, much to the annoyance of motorists.... Again, an ordinance prohibited same and I haven't seen much of the group since.

Makes you wonder about other "fringe" religions...Wicker men, mayhap?

ACtually, I quite agree (but I do not eat SFS). Lot of persons of oriental heritage were making noise that it was offensive/racist to ban the practice. Per NPR.

More on the Missouri "prayer amendment" here:

A Vote For Ignorance

... But the real mischief lies in the fine print of the full amendment, which asserts that "students may express their beliefs about religion in written and oral assignments free from discrimination based on the religious content of their work (and) no student shall be compelled to perform or participate in academic assignments or educational presentations that violate his or her religious beliefs."

The amendment thus is the latest salvo in the "war on science" that columnist Thomas Friedman says is undermining America's ability to compete in the world. It is nothing but a thinly-veiled attack on the teaching of evolution and a back-door attempt to give creationism credibility in the classroom, by enabling students who believe in creationism to opt out of any teaching on evolution and, by extension, preventing teachers from punishing them, with bad grades, for their willful refusal to learn.

In other words, the amendment, if it stands, defends the right of Missouri children to leave school ignorant of science, and blocks attempts by serious teachers to do their jobs. ...

I just can't wait for this to all start going in the obvious direction. First, it'll be about creationists wanting to avoid learning about evolution; then it'll progress to fundamentalist kids wanting to avoid learning certain "distasteful" or "inappropriate" parts of U.S. history class. And the stupidity will go on and on and on...

Missouri deserves what's coming to it. I eagerly await the day when Muslims or other non-Christian religious minorities start to use this amendment to assert their "religious freedoms" in Missouri classrooms. You'll see the **** really hit the fan then.

So how are teachers supposed to grade kids who opt out of part of the curriculum? They can't punish the kids, but it's not fair to the other kids if they're all graded the same. The fundies seem intent on creating an intolerable situation so they can say "See, the public schools are all messed up."

... Part of me wants to tell my son to base his oral & written reports on Jedi teachings.

"Thus as we can clearly see, Jesus wasn't created by 'god' but by midiclorians."

If they refuse to participate because it violates their religious beliefs will they get an automatic A?

Aren't these the same people who are always complaining about dumbing down the curriculum? They've done more than anyone else to water it down.

Steve S

So.....you were using the Cuneiform system for your ballots..........:D:D:D

No thats just way to complicated. Just an X to say you voted for Republicans, no one ever bothered inventing a mark for Democrats, no one was ever going to use it lol

That's me. Always the God-damned optimist.

But we all suffer when education suffers. We're all in this together.

But worse than that, there are blatantly unconstitutional elements in Amendment 2 as well.

There's already an ACLU challenge to the part of it about prisoners. (It's a very narrow challenge, though, but it won't have to wait for people affected by the law with standing for the lawsuit.)

It's also not well thought through. There was a mosque burning in Joplin just recently. How will the good people of Missoura react the first time a Muslim student in a public school puts down his prayer mat?

Aren't these the same people who are always complaining about dumbing down the curriculum? They've done more than anyone else to water it down.

In fairness, these are the same people who want to do away with the Department of Education. (Yes, that's one of Akins' positions.)

FWIW, here's what it said on our ballots:

Official Ballot Title:
Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to ensure:

That the right of Missouri citizens to express their religious beliefs shall not be infringed;
That school children have the right to pray and acknowledge God voluntarily in their schools; and
That all public schools shall display the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution.
It is estimated this proposal will result in little or no costs or savings for state and local governmental entities.

And here's the full text of the amendment: http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/2012ballot/fulltext_1.pdf

You'll notice on the ballot language a complete lack of the phrase "Almighty God" which appears twice in the amendment.

Ironically, the law requires displaying the Bill of Rights, but it seems to buy into the antiquated notion of inalienable, god-given, natural rights. It says, "That all men and women have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences; that no human authority can control or interfere with the rights of conscience. . . ." It then proceeds to lay out such measures to be established by human authority.

And they should be ignored or ridiculed, same as anybody who makes noise that bans on dog and cock fighting are offensive/racist. "Culture" isn't (or at least shouldn't be) carte blanche to do whatever horrific crap people want to do.

Why wait for the Hare Krishnas or fundamentalist Muslims to use the prayer in public legislation? Just declare yourself a worshiper of Ra and shout a greeting to the rising sun every morning from your rooftop, then counter-sue your neighbours when they get pissed off about it.

Hail to the Sun God! He sure is a Fun God! Ra! Ra! Ra!
