I am very proud of my 12-year-old nephew. His family attends church, so I have been careful not to offend my sister and her husband, but I've been quietly introducing him to critical thinking.
Hayden (my nephew) has a best friend whose mother believes that she and her cat have a psychic bond or connection. Each time the woman pulls her car into the driveway, her cat is in the window, looking out for her. Last Friday, she brought Hayden and his friend home with her for a school science project they were working on together, and - sure enough - the cat was in the window, waiting. She told Hayden that the cat doesn't go to the window for anyone else, only her, so they share a connection. She told her son (not in Hayden's presence - he found this out from the friend himself) that she believes the cat is the reincarnation of her father.
Anyway, when she pulled into the driveway with Hayden and his friend, and told him all this, Hayden suggested that the cat was used to the sound of her car engine. He told her that my dog, Molly, runs out into the yard when I get home, because she's learned the sound of my truck, and can distinguish it from other vehicles. He told the lady that if she used another car, the cat wouldn't come to the window.
Miracles of miracles: the woman had a fender-bender on Monday afternoon, and had to acquire a rental car. She picked up Hayden and his friend from school so they could work on their science project. As they pulled up to the house, she told Hayden to watch for the cat. Hayden did - NO CAT. Hayden called me this afternoon, and told me that each day this week, when he's gone to his friend's house to work on the project, the cat hasn't been present. He asked if the lady had noticed that, and she told Hayden she didn't want to talk about it.
I know everyone thinks their kids (I don't have any, so Hayden counts as mine) are great, but I was really proud of him. He gets a gold star.
