I recently noticed that the newer versions of the JRE and java SDK weren't uninstalling the old versions. So I took it upon myself to do this by uninstalling all of it and reinstalling just the new versions.

So, because of my tinkering, applets no longer run in firefox. They do run in IE. So I uninstall and reinstall firefox. No difference.

Am I missing something that I need? The applet I'm trying to run is in java 5.0.

I believe you may have to uninstall, then reinstall Firefox to get things working again.

I said I did that.

Actually, I just managed to fix it. Turns out 1.4.0 didn't uninstall itself correctly. I had to re-uninstall it, then it all worked fantastic.

not uninstalling old versions is a feature. some java apps only work with particular java engines. the change from 1.4 to 1.5 was particularly large.

OS X ships with 1.3.1, 1.4.2 and 1.5.0. The default version is still 1.4.2. An app has to request 1.5 to use it.
