I must be mad, forgive me.

I am seriously thinking of moving, the move no biggie, but it means I would be without a land-line-phone, other than a mobile phone. How or what do I need to connect a computer(desktop??), not a laptop, to the internet using such?

Will I get a the same speed, is it a dial-up or adsl connection?
Who provides such a service if there is one?

I would like something substantial so I can surf the whole net, not just read e-mails.

I promise I am not having a mid-life crisis.:D That is due on October;)

Many mobile phones include a "modem" mode that allows you to allow the phone to connect to your ISP using a USB cable. Speeds vary from 9.6 to 54 kbps, depending upon if the connection is enabled using circuit-switched or packet data.

The preferred option is a PCMCIA card that is available through various retailers and wireless carriers. By far the best is Verizon's EvDO network, marketed as "Broadband Access", which gives DSL-equivalent performance within the coverage area. It's not cheap, at $60/month (and this does not replace your mobile phone bill). Info can be found here.

Get a wireless card and a good antenna. I can connect to free networks just about everywhere now. I have 3 to choose from at home with a better antenna it could easily be 10 or more. If you are in a city Im sure its covered by the default network.
