MMR study withdrawn

Gee whiz? We also shouldn't rule out the fact that cooking food causes autism then, all that radiation ya know. And irradiation, omigosh, irradiation, that causes autism for sure. And if you don't breastfeed your kids, then those few vulnerable will get autism no doubt. [/rant]

ROFLMAO!!

Not so funny though, you have a valid point:

You know, with some of that junk the sCAMs sell, you don't know what is in what you take.
``People assume that many of these products are safe because they are natural,'' said Joyce Lashof, former dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley and also a member of the ad hoc Dietary Supplements Safety Committee. ``But many of them have never been seriously tested for efficacy or toxicity.''... These products have been linked to severe medical problems ranging from psychotic episodes to kidney damage, heart attacks and strokes, some fatal.

Not to mention the bacteri content discovered in some capsules of things like gingko and st. john's wort-still looking up the reference.

Some people get malnourished on sCAM products with their "cleansing" (who knows how badly a feus will be affected by the unknown substances the mom is putting in her body, and how the malnourishment will cause problems exactly, why risk it?). And, not to mention when you forgo vaccines you are putting your kids at an increased chance of getting autism:

We do know that encephalitis is one of the factors that pre-disposes children to autism. All three of the diseases prevented by the MMR vaccine, measles, mumps and rubella, can cause encephalitis. We would not want to leave children unprotected against these diseases for even a short period of time. The routine use of MMR has resulted in the prevention of many thousands of cases of congenital rubella syndrome, a recognized cause of autism.

Not to mention, vaccinated kids are hugely less likely to die when an epidemic hits. They are hugely less likely to get the disease at all.

The sCAM business is killing/injuring people who are trying to avoid sCAM perceived"bad things (chemicals/vaccines)".

My six year old was diagnosed with autism recently, so I've been cruising the autism sites looking for info. Many autism sites are anti-vac sites in disguise. The news about Wakefield etc. is not shaking the anti-vac folks belief at all- they are just digging around for reasons why a 'cover up' is occuring, etc.

I wonder if they take their pets to the vet.

This is precisely how I encountered this bunch. Though the difference is that my son has a speech disability, not autism (it is rare, so I first looked at deaf resources --- and then later the autism resources started to pop up). He was diagnosed over 13 years ago, so I've seen the whole rise of the guesses and blame game for quite a while.... even before we had an internet connection.

It has been an interesting trip to see how we've gone from begging to get a diagnosis for kids with speech delays ("Oh, let's wait and see")... to there is obviously something wrong, so let's blame someone. sigh

Usually someone tries to tell me vaccines are to blame for my son's disability, but then I have to tell them his seizure started when he was still in the hospital after he was born (less than two days old). Then they back up and blame the vaccine I had... except then I have to remind them that I graduated from high school the same year the MMR was available in the USA (1975).

They try and try and try, but it never occurs to them that these disabilities, including autism, have been around for as long has humans could speak. It is just that we treat them differently, like we don't put into institutions anymore.

A really good book on this type of thing is The Silent Boy by Lois Lowry:
