Microsoft Edge is safer than Firefox ...

Thanks for that. Have you tried removing the shortcut from the task bar? I can say that I've run one of the privacy 'mods' and haven't seen anything like that.

I run two Windows installations - one om a laptop that came bundled Win 10 Home and my desktop, which is Windows 10 Pro (Insider Preview). I've never seen that pop-up or anything similar and I haven't tweaked privacy etc. settings beyond the top level settings.

What browsers do you commonly use?

Chrome - not from choice but necessity and it is OKish, after setting it as the default browser not had to change anything else. Only time I see Edge is if I use the search box on the taskbar - which I rarely do.

OK. A quick google suggests Chrome users are also seeing this "Edge is safer" stuff, so I don't know why you haven't. It's fair to say that I rarely see it in FF, while MrsB (a Chrome user) hasn't mentioned it at all.

Yes, Right Click -> Rename and Slow double click both start the rename process in File/Windows Explorer. File renaming can also be started with Alt+H -> R or clicking the Rename button in the ribbon bar.

Doh! I forgot to include the best and quickest method of invoking rename in File/Windows Explorer, F2.

And I do have the Edge icon in my taskbar so that can't be the cause of it.

I believe whether or not it gets shown is dependent on the settings you have for allowed advertising and what browser is set as the users default. It also seems to be dependent on which edition of Win10 you have, no-one at work (enterprise license) has seen this, but I've seen it on one of two PCs at home.

Good one.

Right now, knock on wood, this build (15063.540) of Win10 (Prox64) is giving me no headaches, and an unbelievably clean Event Viewer (after light fixing). Motherboard is overclocking well when asked, as is the video card, and I finally have a stable and excellent working 3D setup for media and games. GOG and Steam keep me busy when not working (OMG, Full Throttle Remastered).

Which is why I now live in fear of the next big OS update, which will be sure to need fixing.

ETA: I'm on FF. I use Edge for viewing pdfs.

You, sir, have earned my respect for your exquisite taste :D

The original was the second computer game I played (the original X-COM was my first). I bought the remastered the first day it was available on Steam.

Probably not, though I haven't looked into it much. In fact a Unix variant doesn't scare me as I spent about 10 years deeply involved with Unix (mostly Solaris running Oracle dbs) and it could be fun to renew that acquaintance. But I imagine the interface would be geared towards ex-Windows users and pointy-clicky, and Unix knowledge wouldn't be much use?

Enough stupid questions from me ... is Linux enough like Windows that the many pages of instructions I've typed up so MrsB can manipulate her photos and manage her documents etc, without my endless intervention to help her, will still be valid?

I'm happy to learn the new tweaks for Linux, but I'm not the only person on these PCs.

Certainly the desktop enviornment (there are several to choose from) will be pointy-clicky and somewhat Windows-like. However, you can always open a terminal window, and all of the old Unix commands are still there. IMO, the Unix/Linux shells are a significantly better command line environment than the Windows console.

Your instructions to MrsB would probably have to be modified. There will be some kind of GUI file management tool, but it won't work exactly like Explorer (a good thing in my opinion, but maybe not for a non-tech savvy user who will have to learn a new interface).
